NO, you do NOT have to go into sleep paralysis to lucid dream! That is only if you WILD (wake Intitiated Lucid Dream). When you WILD, you just go into Sleep Paralysis or SP, and then see hypnagogic imagery which soon forms into dreams.
A much simpler way to lucid dream is to do reality checks throughout the day and look around to see if you are dreaming or not. Look for anything weird or abnormal then do a reality check or RC. A RC could be piching your nose and trying to breathe through it, sticking your finger through your palm, colsing one eye and looking to see if your nose is there, counting fingers, ect. There are tons of RCs you can even make your own!
If you do RCs enough then it will carry over into your dream and it will be like, BAM! "I'm dreaming!" Once that happens you should feel some object in your dream and observe it very closely. This will help to ground you into the dream so you don't wake up and be frustrated. Doing reality checks throughout the day and having them carry over into a dream is called a DILD. It stands for Dream Initiated Lucid Dream.
EDIT: Also something majorly important is to keep a Dream Journal ! It is where you record your dreams when you wake up. It may sound useless but you probably know that you forget your dreams later in the day. If you have a lucid dream, you should write down all the details at soon as you can! Once, I had a lucid dream and didn't write it down, thinking I would remember it later, but then a few hours later, I could only remember half of it!
