Thinking within dreams - looking for more info please

i've been having these dreams where within a dream scenario it seems like "I" (my "self" not my dreaming self but my actual self, if that makes sense) will seem to consciously think through to outcomes which will sometimes cause my head to get a "jolt". almost as if my brain is saying while i'm dreaming "don't go there". like if my dreaming self wants to transcend the upper limits of a "dream space" it seems like my head gets a "jolt" whenever i try. (thats just one example). is this dangerous, what i'm doing? what the heck is this all about? can i find more information? does any one know what i'm talking about? i can elaborate if needed.

So you're saying that you're partially conscious when you're dreaming, and your conscious mind thinks you're doing something too dangerous? As long as you're in a dream, there is no such thing as danger. The idea of something being able to harm you in a dream is an illusion. It's just your brain trying to keep you from harming yourself. I think you might want to elaborate a little more though.

not the actual dream event being able to harm me, rather the physical effects of a consciously chosen event harming me. it seems like my brain is getting zapped when i do certain things within a dream. or when i'm between a dreaming and waking state.

What I'm saying is, I think your mind thinks you're making a bad decision and sense a shock as a negative response. I don't think I can be much help here because I never really studied the brain. It might have something to do with sleep paralysis though.
