      Panicked

Hi! I'm a sixteen year old boy who has recently found great interest in lucid dreams, but has yet to experience one.
Last night I thought I'd try it out, so I went to bed, positioned myself comfortably and closed my eyes. As I lay still, I had urges to move and itches waiting to be scratched but I shook them off and eventually got to a state where, after having had HI for a while, I felt as if my body was not there and I was simply floating. My heart started beating tremendously and breathing became harder. I felt like I was swirling around like I was experiencing vertigo or something similar. Due to the fast heartbeat and breathing difficulties I snapped out of it and immediately moved my body and sat up, calming myself.

Was I close to reaching LD? How can I avoid panicking like such?
      Cheers beforehand!

      Hey Kizi, welcome to Dreamviews!

It sounds like you went right to bed and attempted a WILD, which is very difficult to get into a lucid dream from. You need to wake up 5-7 hours after sleeping and then attempt the WILD.

SP can be a scary experience, but you just need to stay calm and relaxed. Remember that NOTHING in SP can harm you.

I would recommend checking out these WILD tutorials:
      -My WILD Guide
      -KingYoshi's WILD Technique
      -Jeff's Free Falling Technique

      Anyway, good luck!

If your trying to fall asleep and go directly into a dream i would recommend reading the tutorial section on the WILD technique

I would also suggest reading on the DILD technique as i most people first find success with DILD.

But just to answer your question, you probably were feeling sleep paralysis(our bodys way of regenerating while we are sleeping)

To fall asleep and go directly into a dream knowing its a dream usually requires you to wake yourself 6 hrs after you gone to sleep(when your REM dreamcycles are most responsive). Keep your mind alert for about 30 min while studying, thinking, or reading about lucid dreaming. laydown and goto bed thinking about a dream and the scene will merge around those who have success with this.

Once again read the tutorials because it will explain things much better and try them all and see what works best for you!

edit:looks like Mancon answered the question while i finished typing but keep it up and you will have and lucid dream!

I've experienced that super-strong heartbeat feeling, as have numerous others. I'm still not sure what's up with that, but I've heard some people suggest that it's just a hallucination.

Just so you know, the actual purpose of SP is so that you don't act out any dream motions with your physical body. Don't want to get in a fight with a DC and awake to find you've punched a hole in your wall!

When you are trying to get into SP you are tricking your body to think it's asleep. If you're tricking your body to think you are asleep you have to act asleep. You don't sleep with your eyes open do you? So, yeah you keep your eyes closed.

People with the heart beat problem, just breath much deeper, and it will fade, I had the same problem.

      Hi and to Dreamviews.

You need to learn how to stay calm. Many newcomers to Dreamviews post these sort of problems "I get over-excited / I panicked" and the best way to be able to effectively have a lucid dream is to use autosuggestion (this is just my way - some people don't use it, or even know what it means. But I can accredit many of my lucid dreams over the last 10 years to it.

Autosuggestion is a process of suggestion in which the person unconsciously supplies or consciously attempts to supply the means of influencing his own behaviour or beliefs. In your case, you can just think "I am calmly drifting into sleep and will have a lucid dream" but really mean it when you repeat it to yourself.

Thats what I thought. Also one more question lol. Is it possible to have a successful WILD attempt during say a long mid day nap?
