      Aloha

This is to introduce myself as a newcomer.

I have lived in Hawaii since I got my discharge from the Air Force long ago. I used to be a newspaper reporter and travel writer, but I started writing fiction in 1990. Three published books so far, two novels and a short story collection. Last year I won a first-place award from the Society of Professional Journalists for my Honolulu Magazine article about five fishermen who vanished in a storm at sea.

I have traveled over half the world and one of my favorite places was Australia where the aborignee culture has a mythology and religion based on dreaming (the so-called Dream Time). This was particularly interesting to me because I have always been interested in dreams and I majored in anthropology in college.

I have also studied the meaning of dreams in the native Hawaiian culture. I have lived on three different islands -- remote rainforest communities on Maui and the Big Island and twice in Honolulu, where my present home is. When I'm not writing, I freelance in web design and software programming.

My outdoor hobbies are rainforest hiking and snorkeling/spearfishing. I enjoy reading, watching old movies on cable TV, the internet and writing.

If anyone has questions about Hawaii or Polynesian culture, I would be happy to answer them.

I'm not sure we are allowed to advertise our own for-sale books in this forum, so I'll just say this: my first book is a collection of mainstream short stories, the second a mystery novel and the third an autobiographical novel. They haven't sold very well, but I enjoyed writing them.

More pertinent to this forum is a sci-fi/fantasy novella I wrote that still hasn't been published. It's titled "The Cosmos Within" and part of the story involves dreaming as a quantum phenomenon. I also wrote a sci-fi short story about dreams changing external reality -- an homage to the great Ursula LeGuinn novel "The Lathe of Heaven."

By the way, starrwriter is derived from my middle name, Starr.

well, when it comes to writing, it's not the publishing that counts. As long as you enjoyed writing them, and you still feel a need to write, that's all that matters in my opinion...
That last book you mentioned sounds very interesting...i've always wondered what it would be like if our dreams had an effect on reality...
And Starr is an unusual middle name for a man...

It's a fairly common Irish name and the blood family on my father's side (he was an orphan adopted by the Moakes.) Old West outlaw Belle Starr and her husband, Indian Territory peace officer Sam Starr, are ancestors of mine, which makes me part Cherokee.

Wow, that's an interesting heritage you have there...Do you find that has a bearing on your lucidity?
Weren't the Cherokee quite a spiritual people?
