But thats my point............According to the Boffins...............There is no reality. I See it as being deeper than that. Reality is Totally Subjective.

So if you have a dream and the experience completely changes your outlook on something then how is that not real? I mean the dream itself isn't real but the realization that came about in the dream IS real and could easily be applied to real life.

Exactly!!!! That is what all of the great philosophers and shamans have been telling us for thousands of years!

Old indian shamans called dreaming the "second attention" and cultivated lucid dreaming as a way of focussing on this second aspect of reality. Initiates were encouraged to try to merge waking and dreaming reality into one seamless fabric that encompassed all.

Reality IS all within your mind and is extremely subjective, I am beginning to see this more and more every day.

There is no way for us to know what is truly real. There could be so much more information that we are being bombarded with that we simply cannot sense or that our brain can not even decipher, so the brain may just be doing its best to give us an image of the world but there could be so much more to it than that. Or there is the possibility that there is nothing and it is simply what our brain is showing us but we could go on and on with this one.

Yes, but isn't this due to the limited percentage of our brains we actually use. What is it ?. I read about Ten Percent. Just what would we experience if could use the remaining Ninety Percent.

dreamboat, we use 100% of our brain. Its what you would call an "Urban Legend" that we use only 10%.

Anyway, Try your right mouse click on this forum and choose "View Source". What you see this forum as is not what it actually is. Its only the code that you see and that code is more code that you dont see. That's what our brain does, just converts the code. So I would not say this world isn't real, its just not what we think. Just my opinion.

I gotta interject, Newmoom. I'm taking courses in medical termonology and transcription, and its well known that we only use a small percentage of our brains. There are various nerves, cells and functions in the body we still don't know the etiologys of. We use nowhere near 100% of our brains.

I wouldn't call a dream an illusion, I'd call it a different perspective.

Afterall, all dreams or imaginations must be based on some kind of fact for inspiration.

After humans have finished rushing around trying to rule to world before 40 years of age, all they have are dreams that slow the mind down enough to see the truth.

I'm also reminded of a track by incubus (New Skin, on the science album):

Since the initial publication of the chartered electromagnetic spectrum, humans have learned that what they can touch, see, smell and hear, is less than one millionth of reality.

Sorry, but we do use 100% of our brain. Your class was probably pointing out that we only use a small percentage at any given time. You do not need every ounce of your brain to talk so you only use what you need.

I don't know if this is what you mean by 'scientific' dreamboat (actually its more philosophical) but Kant introduced to Western thought the idea that we can never really know the reality that is 'out there'. We can only know the reality that is in our brain. Everything a single person knows, or can ever know, is just chemical/electrical signals being sent by the five senses (I don't want to get into the sixth sense - I hated that little kid) to the brain which then interprets it into a 'virtual reality'. Here's a good summary of this line of thinking: http://twm.co.nz/prussell.htm

latency makes the good point that now we have invented devices that are able to record or 'realise' a reality that our original five senses couldn't. What other devices will we invent to see other 'realities' in the years to come?

Doesn't answer the question as to what is "OUT THERE!!!" or if dreams are anything other than chemicals though. I wish I knew what really was out there. I really do. I'd give anything to know.

Maybe we are dreaming that this is a dream within a dream that dreams the dreamer.

don't confuse the newbie. Its cruel.

Actually my first response to "are we dreaming now?" in so called 'real life' is that things seems more stable, more cause and then effect, than a dream where every weird situation seems to mutate into another weird situation beyond reason (and yet in a dream we accept it as just something that is happening). In 'real life' ie. now, as I am typing, there seems to be more 'sane' feel to everything. Nothing seem to be really freaky happening. But is that just because I am just accepting everything like I do in a sleep dream?)

My head hurts when I think about this a lot.

or is it because f that strange chip planted in your brain while you were asleep which doesn't allow you to question anything?

Do we really care wether it's "real", "scientific", "spiritual", or "philosophical"? Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Great concept, doesn’t really work when applied to real life though (in today’s day and age). Have to take a lot of things into consideration. To enjoy the ride you have to question why you enjoy it.

What about the fat cats who control the admission price, who controls the mechanics, the person who maintains the ride, the person who decides how fast it goes, how scary it is (lol)

funny, so do i..i'm often hacked off that i missed the whole hippie period. and even today, with all this 'new age' stuff...i don't think it could ever be re created...i think it was one of those things that comes around once in a while...
but then again, you would have had to have been a war child, and that might not have been so great...
