      Brand Spankin' New Newbie

      Hello everyone. I'm Sable.

Dreams have always been important to me. I never quite knew what they were...and I'm still not sure. But they've held my devoted interest since childhood.

I've had a few lucid dreams. The last one was a really creepy half lucid dream (if theres such a thing) where I knew I was on the verge of dreaming...when all of the sudden I realized I lying on a table. My wrists and ankles were bound to it. There were stern scientific type people standing all around me simply staring.

"I'm dreaming. I know I'm dreaming." I said out loud. "And I'm getting off this table now." The bindings on me simply vanished and I started to sit up. But the lab coated people all grabbed me and held me down. The started whispering amongst themselves...and the only thing I could make out was, 'she's getting too strong...we can't let this happen.'

I started yelling, "You're not real." and they started to fade...but then they suddenly became solid again and strapped me back down. I couldn't move...I couldn't take control of the dream even though I knew it was a dream. I became so outraged at those scientists that I woke up abruptly and it took me a long time to calm myself.

Since then, I've not had a lucid dream. Whenever I begin to become lucid, I wake up suddenly and can't move.

Is this a normal hurdle when training to have lucid dreams? If it is...how do I overcome it? And why wouldn't my mind let me have control? I'd really like to start lucid dreaming again...I hope this forum can help me gain control. It looks like a great site.

This sounds like you are suffering from something called sleep paralysis. It's when you wake up, but you can't move. It's the brain's safety mechanism, as it stops you acting out your dreams, so that if you dream you are running after someone with a knife, you won't actually do it!
It can actually be very scary, although i use it as a tool to try and become lucid, and i've written a tutorial on it.

By the way, welcome to the board!

I got the same problem. It happens mostly in nightmares. Do you know about SP's? You should do a search on it if you don't.

Anyways when I have nightmares I always know that I'm dreaming. Not because it's unlikely things that happens. But marely because, well, I don't know really. Anyways I always say to myself (more of a scream really)"I wanna wake up NOW!" So I wake up to fast or something, and get SP's. Also I can't breathe while SP'ing, so you're the lucky one ;D

irishcream: can you link that tutorial? I've been dying to know how to attain lucidty during SP's. If I can do that, they can prove to be quite useful ;D.

      Thanx for the welcomes everyone!

I'm so glad I found this site! Looks like it'll keep me on track regarding lucid dreams. It's so easy to get discouraged when you have no one else to talk to about dreams and sleep related issues.

Wish you luck with your dreams just me!

And yep...irishcream...I do get sleep paralysis. Once or twice a week at least...and usually upon waking suddenly. But I get it before sleep too. It's not as scarey to endure when it's pre-dream SP. I too have tried to lucid dream from this state because it feels like I'm teetering on the brink of reality and dreams...and I have slipped straight into a few very short lucid dreams from that state. I'll be certain to check out your tutorial...sounds like it's right up my alley. Thanks for the link.

I hate waking up to SP too PutBoy. It's like 100 times worse than pre-sleep SP. I usually wake up and immediately think I'm dying or something...and once in a great while I can't seem to make myself breath either. It's terrifying!!!! I've been suffering from SP for most of my life and it is still just as frightening as it was the first time it happened. Hopefully we can learn from it or learn to work with it to enhance our dream and sleeping experiences.

I find the best way to wake up (not that ud want to much unless it was a nightmare as u described) is while dreaming, close your eyes as tight as possible and then open them. ull either wake up or the dream setting will likely hav changed. Good to see more newbs joining up!!
If we spend on average 22 years of our life asleep or dreaming, we arguably live two lives...Our awake life and our dream life.
