      Blinking question

hi everyone its cool to finally find a place to ask questions and share experiences.

I had a question, do you guys ever become lucid for a while then blink and wake up?

I dont know if it only happens to me because when I was a kid i came up with a way to wake myself up out of a bad dream. I would blink 3 times. it only worked when i did it 3 times not 2 not 1. But i've been lucid in dreams before and i can go about my business but as soon as i blink, i wake up. What is my problem? I have never had a lucid dream for longer than a few minutes, or atleast as long as i could keep myself from blinking.

Blinking sucks. and the the thing is when i realize i am dreaming the first thing that happens is i blink, i dont know if its instinct because i only did it when i was a kid. But i dont even have to blink 3 times to wake up. It sucks cuz i cant really do much and for some reason its hard not to blink. lol any similar experiences?

Hmm..what happens with this blinking? Is it just an automatic blink, or do you do it consciously?
If it's the latter, then maybe you should try looking at your hands, and looking back into the dreamscape. This is supposed to help you stop losing your lucidity.
Hopefully someone will be able to give you better answers than i, this isn't something i know much about...usually, my lucid dreams just fade into regular ones.

Hi bladeage and welcome to Dream Views!

Your problem might be that you're trying hard not to blink. Always remember that your brain doesn't obey negative commands - if you command yourself not to blink in the dream, you will most propably blink.

However, I think you could try to trigger blinking for something else than waking up. Decide that whenever you blink, your lucidity will increase. Try autosuggestion - tell yourself "My lucidity will increase with every blink" or something like that when you're going to sleep. If you know how to use self hypnosis, even better.

Or then just stop thinking about blinking. If you manage to vanish it from your mind, it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't really know, but there's some ideas. Your problem sounds really weird. However, you should either focus on stopping blinking or changing the consequence of blinking.

I've heard of other people having this problem so it's not unique. I agree with all that Hate said in that you may just be putting to much thought into blinking. Is there any particular reason that you can think of for why you do it now when you become lucid? I don't want to presume anything, but could there be an automatic fear response remaining from when you were younger and had bad dreams.

If that's the case, when you reach lucidity, focus yourself on the dream and repeatedly tell yourself that you are dreaming. Get involved in the dream right away and take control. Don't give yourself time to let emotions get in the way.

*waits for mind to wake up* Well, that's about all I can come up with right now.

Hey guys thanks for ur replies.
Yea i actually blink conciously, so i think the problem is that i try NOT to blink... so im kinda standing there thinking ok i dont wanna blink i dont wanna blink and then as soon as i do, i wake up. I can remember one time where i had a longer lucid dream and i was able to hold myself from blinking, weird thing is im sure i blinked in the dream but i just didnt pay attention to it. i remember i made myself fly over a building and i flew to a park that i liked to go to when i was a kid. i knew i wad lucid so i tried to have fun, but for some reason it popped in my head that if i blink i wake up and then i did as soon as i blinked.
Last night i tried to lucid dream but it didnt work, i did remember what i was dreaming though, i was dreaming i was a murderer and i chopped this little mans head off, weird cuz he was really little, like the size of a barbie doll, then smuggled him outta the country in a toy coffin. Then the cops were after me and they were going to kill me and right before they shot at me i did my infamous blink, but this time i only did ONE HARD blink and i woke up.

i dunno, its frustrating though, cuz blinking is a natural thing we all do, but when i do it, it ruins my lucid dreams, i wish i had another method of waking up out of dreams, not something that is done often. Maybe i could like smack myself in the face or something. But looks like im stuck with blinking

I totally agree with this. I know it's easier said than done, but I think you just need to convince yourself that it's a non-issue, and it will cease to be one.
