First of all, there is no way (that I know of) to stop dreaming. The most you could hope for would be to not remember your dreams. But if you're having bad nightmares, I imagine you probably wake up during the dream, and therefore are probably going to remember it.

I would recommend that you really work on gaining lucidity and dream control. If you can come to the realization during one of these nightmares that it is only a dream and not reality, then you can take control of them, or at least stop being scared of them, because you know that it will have no permanent repercussions on your life or anyone else's.

My first LD was a nightmare I was having as a child. I realized that it must be a dream, and forced myself to wake up to escape the monster that was chasing me. After that, I found that I was never scared of my dreams again. Your case may not be quite that simple, but I think the principle would still apply.

Try to become lucid enough to confront your nightmare. Worse comes to worse, I guess the sleeping pills would do the trick...

Try to make the best out of them, use them as a dreamsign and stuff like that, maybe you are even gonna like them, because they'll help you to gain lucidity..
