To me sometimes total silence leads me to start thinking too much. Yet on the other hand music or noises that are not consistant keep my conscious mind too engaged to go to sleep.
So I like something like a fan or some device that makes a constant mundane niose. So i guess I would fall somewhere in the middle.

I sometimes listen to meditative music to relax, just before falling asleep, and to hopefully induce LD. It does not work, but just because I'm not good at LD. LaBerge himself would suggest to relax before going to bed, that's why I use music and sounds to attain relaxation.

I prefer silence, so most nights I wear foam earplugs to bed.

I've got a little clock radio which can play nature sounds such as rain or the ocean surf. I find it both relaxing and good at drowning out the sounds of the city.

Nope, i'm all for silence, or what i call 'natural' noise, like the wind, or rain tapping on my window...
Anything else drives me nutty...

For me I preferr silence too. But due to I'm in hostel (That sucks) I have to listen to the muzik. And I love to listen yoga musiq while sleeping.

Linked to that, does anyone know any website that provides reliable meditation music and music/sound to induce LD?
With "reliable" I mean something that does not try to hypnotize you with subliminal sounds

have tried reading up on white noise. according to sleep research it stimulates the brain to fall into a more relaxed state. i don't kn ow what the dream guides think of it??

The concept of white noise is interesting, thanks.
It "sounds" like something that can fit with meditation too (thus with LD): so many sounds that one cannot hear a distinct voice; in the highest levesl ("jhana") of meditation, the mind doesn't take any thought and it's the infinite that fill the mind, like the white noise fills the hears.

I personally go to sleep in sort of silence. the only noise in my room usually is my clock, cause it seems really loud when there isn't any other noise. I find it wasy to tune out but sometimes I just listen to it as I fall asleep. As far as white noise, between White Noise and The Ring, I'm not the world's biggest fan of tv's/radios anymore.

Silence makes me realize the thoughts that swim in my head. My personall favourite natural sound is the rain pattering on my roof, it makes me feel less lonely.

whatever works for you. TV or faint radio is fine, i like those too.

I agree, I've always enjoyed watching rain fall and hearing it against a window, the way that it trickles down at different speeds always is great to watch before you drift off to sleep. Its more of a natural sound, completely random yet uniform at the same time... lol

When I lived in the same room as my sister (10 years ago or so), she would sleep with the radio on and I was accustomed to it. When we got separate rooms I did the silence thing and it worked as well; but then I started listening to classical music again by putting my CD player on repeat. That continued until my parents came downstairs and woke me up because the one song I had on repeat was too loud, and I was surprised when I found out it was a lot louder than I'd thought.

Now, I like natural sounds, but living in the dorms, I have to have the fan on or the occasional outside noise will drive me nuts, especially if there's a conversation going on because my mind tends to focus on what they're saying.
