experiencing 2 planes at the same time

Greetings all, I have been lucid dreaming for about a year now, but i've had a recent experience that troubled me. I was wondering if anybody has any feedback or have had similar experiences. I was wallowing in a hypnogogic state and visuals started forming, drifting into a dream state i realized i was dreaming and "woke up" within the transitional phase. I was still viewing the hypno visuals but at the same time could hear the heat kick on the clock and my girlfriend snoring in my ear. My body was awake but my mind was still asleep. It was dificult to hear people in my dream talk or to hear anything really all i heard was that which was happening in the waking world. Kinesthetically also. But my randomly firing synapses were over taking my visual. Has this ever happened to anybody? It was disturbing to me. The only research i have done is LaBerge"s book but like any other book, it doesn't have all the answers. Maybe i'm slowly losing sanity But i don't have anybody else to talk to about this. My girlfriend thinks I'm performing some occult ritual. And i'm afraid to tell anybody else about this or my experiences for fear of being ridiculed or frowned upon. My ideas aren't like those i have seen on sites about lucid dreaming and am just trying to find a place. I have other theories and ideas that i won't divuldge as of yet, perhaps once we get to know one another. Thank you for your time. Subrosa

HI subrosa I cannot say I have personally experienced what you were describing, although lately we have had some new members join with almost identical descriptions. we are a great community, were nice and helpful and not weird. Most of our site is devoted to practical scientific pursuit of lucid Dreaming. If you are into spirituality and OBEs, we have a beyond dreaming forum as well. Subrosa, I think I have had what you described and to my recollection, it was part lucid, part awake state. Later, it fell completely into the lucid dreaming. I stayed in that "between" place for awhile it seems, but was probably only a few minutes. I don't think you should worry, however; I have had this a lot and have always viewed it as just another kind of transitional state to the LD experience.

Subrosa I believe I have experienced something similar some months back....... My consciousness was viewing both the dream world and the waking world at the same time.......

Hey subrosa. If anyone things that mere lucid dreaming is evil or occult, have them come here and I'll tell them differently (as a Christian, even). Anyway, I have had what call a "duality" where I once, while lucid, felt both my sleeping body on my bed, and also my dream body which was moving. It was pretty cool, actually. At first everything was black and I couldn't see, but then I slipped back into the dream. It's not a normal occurrence, but it's not unnatural. I think that since both the conscious and subconscious mind are active at the same time, we can experience the sensation of feeling two bodies, in essence. That's just my theory. -Amé

I think I may have experienced this as well. Once, coming out of a lucid dream, I noticed my concious thoughts were mixing with my dream thoughts. It was a pretty smooth transition from dream mind to waking mind (even though I tried my best to get back to my dream mind). Many of my senses from the waking world were slowly coming back and mixing into the dream world, until finally, all traces of my dream world ceased and I was left awake. I think it's great to be able to experience the mixing of the two worlds, and I think it's nothing to be upset or worried about... very natural. In buddhist belief, when you go to sleep, your mind transitions from what they call a gross level, to a more subtle level, down to the very subtle level. As this happens, the sense awarenesses cease until you reach the very subtle mind (which is thought to be the root mind). It then goes in the opposite direction and the subtle minds create a world based on the formless realm of thought (dreaming). As your mind becomes grosser, the grosser awarenesses such as sound, and touch, sight, etc, begin to reappear, and add to that which buddhists call conciousness. Perhaps you've had the opportunity to actively witness this process... So cool for you!

Yeah, i've done this too, quite recently actually. Lying next to my other half, i was asleep and dreaming. yet i was totally aware of my body in the bed next to him, and the sound of him breathing. He said to me 'are you dreaming?' and i mumbled something. It sounded like he was very far away. Obviously my dream was much more interesting than him! The next day, he told me he was trying to cue lucidity for me. didn't work. Damn. I've noticed i often do it when i'm listening to a chillout cd, or the television is on in the background when i'm really tired.
