look through your past entries, and see if there is a certain type of irregularity that is more common than others.
for instance, if you always see people you couldn't in real life (friend who is overseas, grandma who is dead, george bush in your house) do a reality check that is based on that.
for example-every time you see someone, ask yourself if you can account for why they are there.
or, let's say that you often have people with 3 eyes in your dream, or there is a bathtub in the kitchen, or the dog is half cat- at least 10 times a day, look around you closely for a minute, and closely examine everything to make sure it makes sense.
in the end, if you don't critically test your reality while awake, you won't do so in a dream. you have to examine your environment during the day expecting that it could be a dream. just because something seems real doesn't mean it is.
if you check closely and know you aren't dreaming, pretend you are. look at everything and say 'my mind is creating this, the same mind that creates my dreams...)
