Smoking weed will kill your dream recall. There have been numrous studies on this. Drinking however, may not block your dreams. Sometimes you can get some odd dreams after drinking. I find it doesnt have an effect either way.

I think your information is a bit opposite there? Check out this chart - http://www.cures-not-wars.org/pics/Marijua...a-Melatonin.gif marijuana greatly increases melatonin levels, which is associated with sleeping. I've heard people saying how they've had crazy dreams when smoking weed. Drinking, on the other hand, I've heard is said to supress REM. Though you can get the REM "rebound" effect when you go back to sleep and you have "double REM," making your dreams much more crazy. But at any rate, search. There must be like... a thousand topics about this.

I've had vivid dreams both high and drunk (or each one or the other haha)

In fact, i killed a fifth of whisky last night and experienced a semi lucid dream (read my into thread)

Regardless of what chemical it may produce. By which is only a chemical which would help you into a deeper sleep. Making it more difficult to perform a lucid dream.
But cannabis hampers recall of any kind. Waking day or in your dreams.
It is a mild hallucinogen, so of coarse, if you remember it, the possibility of "crazy" dreams are likely.

Along with many brain cells you probalvy killed the other half of your lucid dream.

20 HOW DO SUBSTANCES LIKE DRUGS AND FOODS AFFECT OUR DREAMS? It is a fact that many substances affect dream recall. Laboratory studies suggest that depressants such as alcohol, marijuana, sleeping pills, and sedatives tend to reduce REM sleep and therefore reduce dream recall. (Some people report the opposite. This is probably due to an effect called REM rebound. For more information about REM rebound, see number 2 above)Some drugs, such as certain anti-depressants, greatly increase dream recall. Some people enjoy these strong, vivid dreams; to others, they may be upsetting or disturbing. People should discuss such drug side-effects with their doctors. Some people say that products such as Ginko, Choline, B vitamins, and/or Zinc may increase dream recall. Others have no success at all with such products. In any case, a word of caution is certainly advised - some substances may be toxic when ingested in large enough quantities.Certain foods, such as milk and turkey, contain a substance which may increase drowsiness. Lastly, it is probably a good idea to follow the common wisdom, to avoid heavy and/or spicy meals near bedtime. When our bodies are very busy with digestion, it may negatively affect our dreams.

I understand that depressents could repress REM - but marijuana is not a depressant (hallucinogen). Check this out - http://www.druglibrary.org/special/tart/tart20.htm. I think that pot doesn't affect your dream recall one way or another everytime... it's different for different people and at different times, from what I've read. I personally cannot speak from authority on this subject... but considering marijuana drastically increases melatonin levels, the many times I've heard people saying they've had crazier dreams when falling asleep stoned, and that study... it seems like it affects dream recall both ways.

By the way it would be wise not to smoke weed as a way of enhancing dreams. In fact... when doing a bit of research just now I say that withdrawal symptoms of marijuana include intense dreams.

it's not so much a matter of getting high before going to sleep that kills your recall. it's when you are a regular smoker (at least twice a week...but then it seems like most people who smoke more than twice a week smoke everyday ) that your dream recall goes to absolute shit. i'm not sure about the physiology, but while i was smoking everyday i remembered maybe one dream every two weeks or so. two weeks after i stopped smoking i started remembering 3+ a night. also, while in amsterdam this past week my dream recall was not affected by the smoke...but i also didn't have particularly strange or interesting dreams.

Is this your way of telling us that you are imbibing every night of the week?

Now, one or two drinks in an evening shouldn't hurt. In fact it is often remarked that a few drinks might actually be good for the heart. However, I noticed that alcohol simply inclines me toward putting on weight. That is where my sense of vanity is strong enough to veto my sense for the enjoyment of a drink or two.

And getting high on a daily basis. Well, that is not terribly good for your intellectual acumen. The daily practice of getting stoned is likely to make one chronically dull, fuzzy... you might find that your voice begins to assume a monotone, as though you have turned into something of a deadened zombie.

A nightcap should not hurt your Lucid Dreaming. For years I drank moderately and found no adverse correlation. But this was very moderate drinking. I get hangovers very easily, and so I am watchful to not have more than two drinks at a time. So, by the middle of the night I am very well sober in my sleep.

And as pleasant as it is to be high all the time... marijuana is a euphoric -- making one happy is what that drug does, but there are some additional effects. One needs to remember that these drugs were not designed purely for their intended effect, but have other impacts. It would be nice if they designed a drug that could make one happy without also making one stupid -- destroying short term memory, and erroding normal motivations. Also, marijuana smoking has contributed a great deal toward the increased rates of obesity. Society has never been as fat as it is today. marijuana 'munchies' probably has a great deal to do with it. And, yes, I think that it would impede lucid dreaming.

Lucid Dreaming comes from the Higher Mind for the fulfillment of some actual solid intentions, motivated by whatever Wisdom is possessed by that Higher Mind. If one is stoned all of the time, then the Higher Mind would only suppose itself to be wasting its time, no? You see, the Higher Mind is part of the Collective Mind. It is very objective about these things and does not feel itself to be limited exclusively to having only our self to work with. The Higher Mind is not desperate to get through to us. It is just as well satisfied to let us rot away. The Collective Mind can find somebody else -- somebody who is healthy, actice and alert -- who is in the position to benefit and utilize the experiences and knowledge conveyed by Lucid Dreaming.

i use to smoke weed every single day, about a half ounce or more a day, and it killed my dream recall, i didn't remember a single dream for months...it may vary from person to person, but the way i see it is...if it dont kill your dreams in the dreaming world, it will for sure kill your dreams in the waking world..
