      First LD experience scared me

      Hi all!!

I am new to the board, and I wanted to explain my first experience with lucid dreaming to see if anyone else felt the same way as me when they first experienced it.

Well, I had always known about lucid dreaming because my older brother was always interested in it, so I had basic knowledge on the topic, but never really intended to have one myself.

It wasn't until last Friday night, when I had one accidentally without any intention. In my dream, I was in my bedroom, and looked at my cell phone and it was blinking, and I suddenly realized I was dreaming because it never blinks (dream sign). This immediately freaked me out, and I tried to force myself to wake up because I was scared of the intensity of the feeling. This forcing myself to wake up only led to me having a false awakening, which had more dream signs, however, this time they didn't make me conscious that I was dreaming. Then eventually I finally woke up.

I have not had a lucid dream since. Although I was very frightened upon realizing that I was lucid dreaming, I believe I felt like this because I was never aware of the intensity of them, and that night I had not intended to have one.

Since that night, I have reading up on lucid dreaming, and anticipate having another one. I have been trying to do exercises to try to help me because lucid again, but have not had any luck. I hope that this time I do not freak out, because now I am intending on having them. They sound so AWESOME! and I can't wait to have another one.

Please, if anyone has had a similar experience, let me know, so that I can feel peace of mind that I won't freak out when I become lucid again. Reading these posts, I feel like I'm the only one who got scared the first time. Thanks!!

I can understand why it might kinda freak you out, but I never felt that way. When I had my first lucid, which started as a nightmare, I had no idea about lucid dreaming -- but I thought it was the coolest thing in the world that I realized I was dreaming and was able to wake myself to escape the monster. Perhaps the relief I felt when realizing that the monster wasn't real was more powerful than any fear I might have felt at becoming lucid?

      Welcome to LD's!

I'm sorry to hear your first experience was scary. I had had many LD's through out the years, but I didn't realize that they were call lucid dreams, and I didn't really think about the fact that I might be able to control them until I found Dream Views. Since then I've had a few more LD's. I can't have them on demand yet, but occasionally I'll have a DILD. Still working towards a WILD.

Anyway, just don't be scared off by the first experience. LD'ing is like no other experience. It's very cool once you get past the scared/overly excited stage and when you can calm down and enjoy them and do a bit of exploring.

I always look forward to having and LD. Hopefully you will be able to achieve them as well!!

      Good Luck!

Hello. I'm new to all this stuff as well. My experience went the other way round in that I got "the fear" a little later on. Particularly because a mate of mine told me anyone you talk to in that state is a possible trans-dimensional demon! Not something I usually believe in but when you're under things are a bit different.

Also - this is the newbie section DILD and WILD. No idea what they mean. No idea at all.
