Some people have success stopping to stabilze the LD before they try anything. As soon as you realize you're dreaming, stop and don't do anything. Then either look at your hands, lean against a wall, anything you can do to calm down and stabilize the dream. Then once you feel you've got a good handle on it, try to walk around or do something else.

This just takes practice, so keep trying!

just give it time and keep practicing. LDing is kind of like learning to walk, you can't just suddenly stand up one day and run around, it takes practice... one step at a time
When I had these short LDs I would simply look at my environment for a while while rubbing my hands - other times I would wake up as soon as I realize I'm dreaming, the only solution is to keep trying and keep practicing.
      Good Luck!
      Are you dreaming or awake?

I think that the main thing to try is to stay calm when you realize you are dreaming, and DON"T THINK about waking up. Don't think about the fact that you are dreaming. Think about what's around you. Think about the dream and how real it feels. If you concentrate on how real it feels, it will actually make the dream feel more real. Your thought process has a larger part to do with your dreams than most people realize.
It's alot like flying in a dream. The instant that you think that you MIGHT not be able to fly, it will happen. In the same aspect, the instant that you think that you MIGHT wake up, you will. There is no time to pull back once this thought gets in your head, either.
So, the instant you realize you are dreaming, stand still, like the others have said, relax, and occupy your mind!
