You only need 5-6 hours of sleep followed by an awakening if you're attempting a WILD or MILD (Wake-Induced Lucid Dream and Mnemonic-Induced Lucid Dream, respectively).
Almost all of my lucid dreams are DILDs--Dream Induced Lucid Dreams. These are the most common type of LD for nearly everybody, and don't require any preparation whatseover. The reality checks and dream journal are all you need--then you will just realize you're dreaming in the middle of a normal dream and go lucid.
WILDs and MILDs are just shortcuts and techniques to give more vivid LDs, on demand, but they're primarily for more advanced LD'ers. It's important to work on DILDs, RC's and your DJ before moving on to trying the more advanced techniques.
For a DILD, just keep working on your reality checks and dream journal, and sleep as normal. It should pay off fairly rapidly, and within a few weeks tops, you'll just realize you're dreaming in the middle of a normal dream.
Welcome to the forum, by the way!
Cheers,
