Hi there Code Name!
Well, I'm not the MOST qualified WILDer on the site by any means, but I've had a few successes so I guess I can give as much help as any. First off, let me say that WILD is NOTE the best technique to try for a newbie - it usually involves a long process of trial and error to get it right and reliable. I still haven't done that. (Though mostly because of a few months' laziness last year that screwed things up) But, since you did try, I'll try to give a breakdown of what happened in your attempt.

Okay, firstly you might want to sleep for a bit longer at night before WBTB and WILDing. I'd go to bed at your usualy time at night, sleep for 4-5.5 hours (as a very general guide), then wake up for a bit, then try WILD.
The breathing technique is one of many. Instead of focussing on your breathing, you could try the counting method, or many others. The numbness and sinking you describe is the beginnings of sleep paralysis, or maybe very light sleep paralysis. I barely get anything except numbness. That's okay, SP is not neccessary to WILD.

This is either your actual room, or the beginnings of hypnogogic imagery. Likely the second.

The eyes moving rapidly is normal, it's a part of natural sleep - the only difference is this time you're conscious and aware of it. Don't try to stop it, instead focus on something else and try not to notice it. Like counting, or breathing, or imagery (if you get HI - I barely ever do)

I'd say no, don't turn the light on. You want your room dark and without distractions - at least, that's my perspective. Feel free to experiment, but I'd say you're better off in a dark room.
