I started my quest for dream control three days ago. I am having no troubles developing dream recall. It seems my recall abilities are increasing exponentially. Since this is happening so quick I am having trouble writing everything down. My dreams seem complicated and everything in them seems out of the ordinary, not just a few details here and there and not in a normal setting. I still remember my dream very well from last night and I believe my abilities will only increase. I want to know if I should still write down a journal entry every time I wake up. If the whole idea behind writing an entry is trying to remember your dreams and I already remember them very well then why continue? I realize writing an entry will help in finding a dream sign however do I really need a dream sign? Can't I just do a bunch of reality checks? Guidance please!

Complicated meaning so many things are happening and I enter so many different settings when traveling in my dream world. Last night was a very long dream and I just don't know how to put it into context if I have more like it. I would also like to know if it is possible I had several different dreams during the night and that is what I am thinking of.

Hey there, welcome.

From my own experience, I have about 4 or 5 dreams throughout the night. I don't remember them at all unless I specifically make a point of telling myself before I go to sleep that I want to wake up (and set an alarm) every 90 minutes. Then, when I wake up every 90 minutes, I write down as much of my dream as I can, before going back to sleep. Then, when I wake up in the morning I finish writing out all the dreams as best as I remember them.

The journal is also there to have somewhere to write your lucid dreams. You might remember it perfectly now, but in 3 years you might not. At least if you wrote your LD down, you can look back, or show it to your children or something.

Also, you can just do reality checks randomly, although the reason you use dreamsigns from a DJ is so that you can train your brain to do RCs in situations common to your dreams. For example, if you often dream of black dogs, then do an RC every time you see a black dog. Then, your brain will become accustomed to doing RCs when you see black dogs, and when you dream about a black dog you'll do an RC, and viola!

From my experience, if you stop journaling your recall will fade. I too could remember 4+ very elaborate dreams a night. I was spending 30-45 min every morning writing them down, still leaving a lot of detail out. Then I thought I didn't need to do it anymore since I was just that good. One thing led to another and next thing I know I am not remembering any dreams anymore.

Well, now I am just starting to journal again and getting some recall back but it is much more difficult this time around.

What carlhungis said.

If I'm writing in my journal its LDs every other day - if I'm not its every other week.

Don't stop writing your dreams down! A dream journal is your most needed tool for lucid dreaming. Even if your recall is brilliant, you should still write them down. After a while your recall could fade.

I will take all your advice. Its just that dream I had yesterday night was so long and bizarre I don't know how to put it all on paper. Maybe it won't happen again. Last night I had a shorter and simpler but still very clear dream. I suppose in time I will get used to dream journal entry. 13redfan you mentioned you woke up every 90 minutes. I am definently not going to wake up that often, but I wonder if waking up more often would be in my best interest. Right now I am waking up once during the middle of my sleep period.

lol I don't do that every night (although the nights I do wake up that often, I feel incredibly refreshed the next day) I just did it in the beginning to get enough dreams in my DJ so I could get a dreamsign and LD.
When I was doing it I would remember about 4 or 5 dreams a night. Nowadays I only wake up maybe once or twice in the night, and remember 2 or 3 dreams a night. It all depends on you

If you don't want to write down the whole dreams in the middle of the night, then just write a snippet of the dream that will remind you of the whole dream, and when you have some extra time during the day write the actual dream down. I definitely don't reccommend you stop writing. Just as carlhungis said, I too was spending 30+ mins writing, and stopped, and now i remember nothing.

That is a good idea. Seems like a good way to do it for me.

Glad I could help Anyways, something that didn't really register earlier, I want to say that that's really amazing that you have an inconviently large amount of recall after so short a time period. It took me a few weeks to get that kind of recall.

I'll take that as a compliment. Course, I now seem to have shorter but more complete dreams. Still a good amount of recall though. I am gonna look for a dream sign now. To my surprise, I had a dream involving device failure last night!
