Thread: Is it worth it?

I think I have been able to lucid dream since long before i knew what it was. It doesn't happen all the time, but I was surprised when I learned that everyone didn't have dreams where they could control what they were doing. I guess I got really curious when I had a lucid dream that I was in a bar in Budapest, a city I used to live in and miss dearly. I almost made it to the door and realized I would have been able to explore the entire city at leisure. I was totally thrilled, but unfortunately, I ran into a sinister midget by the door, got scared, and woke up. Since then, I saw Waking Life and I have been trying to master this lucid dreaming stuff.

My question is: is it a good idea? Don't get me wrong, I totally see the appeal, but do you lose the spontaneity of dreams? That's a huge price to pay. I have pretty good recall, and I cherish some of my strange dreams almost as much as I cherish childhood memories. Compared to what I dream, what I can will pales in creativity. Will I lose this if I get better at lucid dreaming. This question has kept me from really seriously trying to get better at lucid dreaming for a long time.

I would appreciate viewpoints on this.

Strange name.

Lucid dreams don't happen all the time, for most anyway... But those of us who have to work to gain the ability do not have to worry about not having regular dreams.

I have regular dreams most of the time but occasionally have lucid dreams, so I get a bit of both.

No, you will never lose the ability to dream normally.
Only thing that seem to happen is : you may start using superpowers in your dreams. Which is a good thing.

For example, instead of dying in a dream and waking up, you may want to "reload" the dream and try something again...

You may posess/summon weapons without even thinking of it...

you may use superspeed/high jumps and such...

LDs generally influence your dreams and enchnce them...

It may appear to some that lucidity is defying a dream; it is denying it the right to grow and create. But this is only because many times we are doing this ourselves; our tired minds are fooled into thinking that lucidity is seperate from dreaming somehow and we have to fight to clarify that distinction. This can be fun. But sometimes we should try and let the lucidity coexist with the dream; this is tough for a newbie like myself because I can imagine it is very easy to lose lucidity this way. But when you let lucidity and dreams coexist, I expect that the same randomness will occur as if it is a normal dream, but we will have at our disposal insight and, more importantly, an incredibly vivid point of view that so characterises good lucid dreams.

Yes, it is worth it. I find that I have 3-4 dreams I can remember each night. Even if I were lucid in 1/2 of them, that would still leave me with 14 random cool non-lucid dreams!

Yeah, no one but LaBerge himself can truly say thay can be lucid at will, and even then I'm sure he goes along with the dream most f the time.

Very wrong, my friend. On this forum, i have known several people that can do this...or so they claim.

The fact that you are lucid gives you some control over the dream plot and scenario, but the dream world will always remain as random as usual unless you can control every single bit(which is almost impossible). Your unconscious mind will always rule the dream world and what you are doing while lucid is introducing the conscious mind into this world...
