Lucidity is a good way to do this. Nightmares often have rather obvious dreamsigns, so in learning to recognise them you'll know they're not real while they happen, so you can go on with what you want. And if you get good at dream control you should be able to 'beat' the big bad in the nightmare.

Nightmares are just dreams, don't be afraid to go back to sleep... Are they usually recurring?

In my experience, when I have a nightmare, then wake up, I don't have another when I go back to sleep. Unless you have nightmares all the time, the same is probably true for you. Unless you do have nightmares all the time, just tell yourself that since you just had a nightmare, you're not due to have another anytime soon.

Calm down. Listen to some classical music or get one of those Ocean Sounds tapes. I love the sound of water. It's raining right now. Ah... tranquil.

i always love it when i find myself in the middle of a nightmare because it almost always causes instant lucidity... but i usually cant just change the dreamscape... i have to either fight it out, or run... and my flight aint so good recently, so i usually have to stand my ground. next time you wake up from a nightmare, as long as it's not too personally frightening (i had one where someone stabbed my dad while he was trying to protect me, i couldnt shrug that off untill i saw him again) i'd suggest going back to sleep hoping that nightmare will be waiting for you... instant dreamsign.

and if that thing tries to get you i'd suggest as the easiest way to evade it would be to become... not solid? if it tries to strike you, or burn you become numb and fluid, let it pass right through you... dont resist, but without giving in... if that makes any sense.
