do you need a dream journal if you have a good dream recall?

i can remember atleast 2 dreams a night without using my journal. i may forget my dream for a little bit but things always remind me of my previous dream and it all comes back to me.

I remember 4-5 dreams a night if I use my dream journal. When I don't write in my journal I rarely even remember one dream

You don't NEED it, but it would help. There's always room for improvement.

Often it's the smaller details which a dream journal will help you remember. Also, after you've had hundreds and hundreds of dreams, its fun to read through them and jog your memory. Your probably not going to remember them forever.

^^ Very true. I like to read back in my DJ and I am astounded to read all the dreams I've had that I have completely forgotten about until I read them again, then the memory comes right back!

But yes, DJs are useful, not only in improving recall, but helping you become more aware of your dreams in general. There have been many times that I've been dreaming and thought to myself "I have to remember to write this one down!" and BAM, I'm lucid. It's basically an exercise to increase awareness as well as recall. Because let's face it - what's the point of having an LD if you can't remember it?

The thing I notice of the dream journal I kept on this site is that it was good for some laughs. Like they said above you are not going to remember your dreams forever and it is sometimes fun after a period of time to go back and look at what you have dreamt about. A dream journal may be able to help you with dream recall in that by writing down what you have dreamt about you are commiting it to memory. It's person specific some people can remember their dreams no matter what while others have a hard time with it. If you do decide to make a dream journal and see that it is helping you rememer your dreams then by all means stick with it.
