      Lucid Dream: Awake Or Sleeping

      This has probably been asked,

When you are in a LD are you sleeping or are you awake?

Sleep: to take the rest afforded by a suspension of voluntary bodily functions and the natural suspension, complete or partial, of consciousness; cease being awake.

      But aren't you conscious?

Just say you got 8 hours of sleep but had a 2 hour LD, do you still get a full 8 hour sleep?

You are sleeping when you LD. I would say when you LD you are only partly conscious which would let it fit with that definition of sleep that you gave. Being "awake" in a dream feels different than being being awake IRL and this is all really hard to explain lol. About your last question yes you still get the full 8 hours of sleep. Even though you may be doing stuff in an LD you won't lose sleep and feel tired because of it. After an LD you will probably feel better all day.

I'd say you're at least partially conscious in all your dreams. You're aware of your environment, existence, sensations, and thoughts, and that's the definition of consciousness. Although you may be a little more conscious in a lucid dream, the change isn't significant enough to make any difference in how much rest you get. Besides, I've heard that while dreaming, the brain is about as active as it is while awake, so it's unlikely that brain activity corresponds to the level of rest you get.

You are sleeping, your body is resting, but your mind it working a little more than usuall. I mean you dream anyway, all you are doing is being aware that its a dream.

      It depends.

      I don't think your either
it doesnt say anywhere you have to be one or the other.

Sleep can mean physically and mentally.

awake can mean physically and mentally.

But if i had to draw the line, I would actually say awake.

      PUT IT THIS WAY.

when you sleep walk you are physically awake but not mentally, but you are classed as sleeping.

so simply invert that and when you are mentally awake but physically asleep you are awake!

      hoorah.
