looking for serious explorers of the subconscious to aid me

hello there,i found this site quite by accident so forgive me if i don't synchronise with everyone right away.
basically the deal is thus i've been having really messed up dreams for...lets say about 15 years,i'm actually about 21 years old but nobody tunes in straight away right

as a child i used to dream about these twisted mofo's who in my kid speak i referred to as the shadow men, they would chase me,and sometimes appear as elderley relatives both dead and alive (some who i didn't even recognise) but what messed me up the most was how delighted they were when they feasted away on my worst fears.

alas my dreams have been getting worse of late and i just wanted to discuss it with regular folk rather than some shrink who really doesn't care beyond the capacity of his/her job description.

      thanx

Hello VarcolaciFan and Welcome to Dream Views!!!

There seem to be a lot of people right now that are having problems with nightmares. I have violent/scary dreams all the time but i don't consider them nightmares since they do not scare me (most the time). I do know how you feel though... being chased is can freak me out...

Anyway once you read up on Lucid Dreaming and begin to practice the techniques these occurrences can be dream signs and ultimately turn into lucid dreams. At that time, you are aware you are dreaming so the dreams may no longer freak you out! Some have even said their dreams that used to be nightmares, now that they are lucid dreams they are actually funny!

Feel free to share your dreams with us in detail if you want. Personally I love to read others dream experiences!

If there is anything I can do to help please let me know...

And I just want to wish you future Sweet Dreams!!!!

You have my sympathy's. I rarely have nightmares, but when I do, they can get pretty scary.

You know some people use nightmares to their advantages. They use the nightmares as their dreamsigns and to induce lucidity. I remember one person who was doing this but i cant remember her name. I think her avatar is a penguin...maybe not. Im not sure, but if you do a search on nightmares here then you'll probably find something that will help you

      Good luck

      Hey there, Welcome VarcolaciFan

Those two have the right idea for you already.
Would just like to add to it perhaps, I used to have nightmares myself, and its one of my 'natural' dreamsigns (cause for 'dream alert' if you will).
And I'm currently helping some others with nightmares too...

I see nightmares as being twofold :
You can either solve the problem in waking life therapy - a shrink for example. If you find the underlying cause, this may work.

Or you can confront the nightmare by being lucid and overcoming it. The reason this works is because you would no longer br afraid of the fear that sparked the nightmare. Fun self-therapy if you will.
It takes a bit of practice and effort, but is very rewarding in more ways than just to stop nightmares

To do this, you need to be lucid, and to be lucid simply involves realising that you're dreaming, and its in your head. The most effective seems to be to do what I did - turn it into a dream sign (like the others said). This means that whenever something scares you, or causes a feeling of dislike... you check if its a dream. Eventually this will become a habit, and you will automatically do it in your dreams too. This might take a little time (1 to 2 weeks usually - it varies), but it works well.

This is called a 'reality check' and you can find a list of them in the tutorials section
I recommend the questioning of yourself, surroundings and memory, and then looking at your hands. And then block your nose and keep breathing.
You can read up on it in the tutorials like I said

Hello and welcome to the forum VarcolaciFan!

I can relate to your problems big time. I'm using LDing to try to combat my recurring nightmares and sleep disorders. I have tried psychiatrists but they were hopeless and had not the slightest clue - bet they were paid handsomely, though .

Try what Placebo advises and use LDs to take control of the nightmares. I try placing hilarious scenes or objects in my dreams to take my mind off the terror - it works and you wake up laughing!

BTW - what's wrong with Yorkshire? I'm a Yorkshire lass from near Sheffield and then North Yorkshire - terrific place!!

      Good luck.

that are having problems with nightmares[/b]
A tutorial on this will be available soon, if Seeker can find time and if it gets accepted. Lucky actually, I just chose it because I figured everybody has had a nightmare at least once.
