Hey there, Welcome VarcolaciFan
Those two have the right idea for you already.
Would just like to add to it perhaps, I used to have nightmares myself, and its one of my 'natural' dreamsigns (cause for 'dream alert' if you will).
And I'm currently helping some others with nightmares too...
I see nightmares as being twofold :
You can either solve the problem in waking life therapy - a shrink for example. If you find the underlying cause, this may work.
Or you can confront the nightmare by being lucid and overcoming it. The reason this works is because you would no longer br afraid of the fear that sparked the nightmare. Fun self-therapy if you will.
It takes a bit of practice and effort, but is very rewarding in more ways than just to stop nightmares
To do this, you need to be lucid, and to be lucid simply involves realising that you're dreaming, and its in your head. The most effective seems to be to do what I did - turn it into a dream sign (like the others said). This means that whenever something scares you, or causes a feeling of dislike... you check if its a dream. Eventually this will become a habit, and you will automatically do it in your dreams too. This might take a little time (1 to 2 weeks usually - it varies), but it works well.
This is called a 'reality check' and you can find a list of them in the tutorials section
I recommend the questioning of yourself, surroundings and memory, and then looking at your hands. And then block your nose and keep breathing.
You can read up on it in the tutorials like I said
