Question how to do lucid dreaming not sure

I was just thinking as I tried this last night, just wondering how do you know if your in a dream I thought its impossible to control, or is that what the techniques are for. When I tried it I felt I got a little close I felt numb and kind of stuck to the bed and I felt I had a few vibrations twitching of muscles and my feet flexed forward a little but from there on it was just I couldn't progress that was all I could do. This is my first time ever trying this so just wanted to know is this right?

Well reading your post I'm pretty sure you were trying a WILD. If so, were you trying this with a WBTB (wake-back-to-bed, go to sleep, get up 5 hours into your sleep) or did you just try to do this on the first time you fall asleep?

Well if your new to Lucid dreaming I wouldn't suggest trying WILD for your first technique. I haven't even done a WILD but yet, i've had 30 LD's. Just try to do RC's and start a dream journal. I do about 4 RC's a day and I get a lot of DILD's.

      Question

How can you possibly get a dild by just doing reality checks in the real world?
i don't really get the whole reality check concept. How do you have a lucid dream by simply doing rc's. How does your conscious know its a reality check and to do it when your asleep. I really want to lucid dream and control what I do in them. It would be totally cool if I could do that.

I would suggest reading this thread before anything else (don't bother with the schedule until you are actually ready for those techniques). Then you can visit the Tutorial Section for more techniques and info.
Success comes to those who are not afraid of failing.

If you want to wild, I suggest finding a sweet spot, where you are not to tired, but not to awake.
