How come I did not become lucid?

Okay, here is a short piece from my last dream...

I remember I looked at my hands a lot. They were like midget fingers, but different. There were six fingers separated in twos. Two on the left side, two in the middle, and two on the right. I remember thinking, “This is a dream,” but strangely I did not become lucid. I must’ve looked at my hands twenty times in this dream. I didn’t become lucid at all.
Through the whole dream I remember saying it was a dream. I looked and my hands a lot and knew they looked different because it was a dream, but at no time was I lucid. I never became "aware" that I was dreaming even when I said to myself that this is a dream.

      Anyone know what's with that?

From what I can tell you forgot to test your reality. Yes you questioned it the entire time great, but do an actual test. Let say you stick your finger through your hand, once you witness that its a complete realization that your dreaming the lucidity starts at that point....

Yeah, sounds like you just had a very low level of Lucidity. Are you just starting out with LDing? If so that could be why. Your just not used to it yet, and it didn't fully sink in. Maybe next time you will remember this experience in the dream, and then get a higher level of lucidity because of it.

Try doing multiple realty checks. Like pushing finger through hand and pinching nose and breathing.

Just keep practicing, you'll get it.

But if I had that much intelligence, in the dream, to do a test wouldn’t I have become lucid before that? Looking at the dream now, its like I was extremely retarded. I didn’t question if it was a dream, I knew it.

I've had dreams like that, where your focus is only on saying "I'm dreaming" and not really moving beyond it. I suppose that technically it's a lucid dream, although the level of awareness/logic is so low that it doesn't feel like it when you wake up.

Since during a dream your ability to experience your experience is so low it's pretty easy to not get beyond the "I'm dreaming" notion.

No that's not true. It's easy to think about the fact that you could be dreaming, and do a test without being Lucid first. That's what the test is for.

Well if you knew you were dreaming already, then you were Lucid. Just a low level. you'll probably have better luck next time.

Don't worry about being retarded in your dream. We all are! It's very easy to get confused in them.

Will my awareness just build up over time? It's easy for me to say (in waking life), "Dummy, I just said I know I am in a dream. Do a test," but in the dream I was just so dumb that never entered my mind.

Yeah, don't be to hard on yourself. It's time to celebrate. It just means your that much closer to full Lucidity.

Even when your experienced that can happen sometimes. Just keep at it, you'll get a good one soon.
