Thread: Ambigous feelings towards LDs

Hey,

I've had like three LDs when I was younger (around 17), and two this year (24 now), the last one a few days ago.

Although I really enjoy having these LDs, and even being in a really good mood afterwards, I'm sort of ambigous towards it... Before I go to sleep I feel it would be awesome to have an LD, but it also scares me a bit as well. I know it's just a dream and that whatever happens in it really can't hurt me (except in Terror on Elm St maybe, hehe), but I still feel a bit uncomfortable! I know that a negative mind more likely will induce negative dreams, and by knowing that I get negative. Like a down-spiral, sort of. On the other end of the spectrum I get kinda angry over myself for being this childish... Shape up, be a man!!

The thing is I had a very dramatic paranormal experience (when awake, not dreaming) almost three years ago, and I think it left some strong, undesired marks in my subconscious. I think what really scares me is that I will remember this event when becoming lucid, and then sort of unwillingly manifesting it inside my dream. And FYU: I've never been as frightened as that one time, and although I know that it couldn't hurt me in my dreams (probably not atleast), it's being scared that scares the shit out of me!

Stupid, I know, but it's still an issue that I'll have to resolve somehow. Any thoughts of how I should do this, anyone? Have you felt the same way?

Before you go to bed, make a mental note to have a pleasent dream, and then be specific.

You can use lucid dreams to conquer your fears.

Thanks for the tips, but it's like a huge gap between what my conscious tells me and what my feelings tell me. Pain in the arse!

Well, about the thing that happened; it's not that much of a big a deal really. My girlfriend at the time had had some experiences with "something" trying to shove her away and stealing her body while she was sleeping, and she had to fight to wake up. This had happened to her since she was little and she was kinda used to it and didn't really bother much. Well, it happened this one night when I was with her, and she woke up. We talked about it (stupid) and then, right when we both went to sleep again something wierd happened. It felt like "something" suddenly attacked me and I freaked out totally! It's like I felt a presence of something really really REALLY evil, I can't describe it in any other way. Ever panicked? It's the worst thing ever. Then I had to fight mentally for a few seconds trying to keep "it" away, it was really horrible. After that we couldn't sleep in the same bed for quite a long time, but it all sorted itself out later. But I still carry the memory.

I have an open mind towards paranormal phenomena, but I also try to keep a critical stance as well. To me it doesn't matter though wether this happened for real or it was just a coinsidence with my mind playing tricks on me (you know what the combination sleep, good imagination and watching "the Exorcist" can do to you ), but it's the total panic I felt during the event that still haunts me. Not the event itself really. I very seldom have nightmares, so I'm not at all wrestling with this anymore. But I guess it's the combination of dream and imagination that scares me a bit, like I said before, if I become lucid and then aware of this maybe I'll trigger something similar again. Wouldn't want that!

So that's why I'm kinda ambiguous towards LDs. But as I said; I almost never have nightmares (can't remember my last one) and I've never experienced anything bad in any of my (5) LDs, so I guess I could be blowing this out of proportions. But that's me, thinking WAY to much about things!

Anyways, you asked and I delivered. So, any tips on how to approach LDs in the future? Thanks for any help.

Anyway.. I can totally relate with that utter panic that you felt. A lot of my FAs are pretty freaky.. nothing really happens in them, but I feel a presence or something unnerving in the air.

Of course it's all in your head though. Did your last two LDs go normally? Like Death-Wuad said, just think pleasant thoughts. Reason with yourself, say something like, "Hey, that experience only happened once.. I'm moving on now. It's just my imagination, and from now on I'm going to imagine better things."

Ooh, also what I've noticed.. if I have a LD or FA when it's light outside in the real world, it'll be bright and happy in the dream world for me. It's when it's dark out that I have frightening experiences sometimes.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions all. I just think I need to let this slip into my mind at a slow pace, and do feel that by each day I'm becoming more relaxed towards the whole concept of LDs. My last two LDs were really nice, I was flying and stuff, enjoying how utterly realistic the dream world can be. There's hardly nothing better, xcept the real truth then, maybe.
