      I want to lucid dream

      Yes I do, and I can't.

I don't understand how you're supposed to ask yourself if you're dreaming and do reality checks in your dreams. My dreams are just like, a TV. I only watch them.

But. I can do something. If I am tired and close my eyes and concentrate for a little while, I think I can go into a "rem stage". I feel my heart beat wildly, and my eyes start twitching like mad. If I sit there through it, this will happen like 4-7 times each lasting like 2 minutes. But during these "REMs", all I see is blackness just as you see when your eyes are closed. No dreams.

Is there any way I can take this blackness, and make it into a dream? I have tried telling myself while REMing to "start dream now" or "turn blackness into yellow", but nothing works.

      help

First off, you should know that you're in good company.

Anyway, the basic idea behind a reality check is simply to do them so often during the waking hours that it will become almost involuntary (i.e. you're conditioning yourself); as you develop this habit you should eventually notice that you also perform them while you sleep. that may not sound all that likely, but i suppose you could say it's akin to realizing that you have to turn the knob first before you pull the door open. thus, if you remember how to open doors in dreams, then there's hope for you! if not, well, then, TV can be interesting...in a mind-numbing sort of way.

      btw, WELCOME ABOARD!
Each new day is a chance to turn it all around.

      heh

Nevermind CT...he is just being himself

      Welcome to DV!!!!

I do concur with CT in that those are not exactly periods of REM so they would be no good. I suggest you follow Ice's suggestion and if that doesn't work for you(different things are good for different people), then venture into our tutorial section and learn about the many other methods of induction

      Welcome aboard!!!

I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

perhaps he's experiencing a form of WILD or maybe an OBE? I heard that for some people that sometimes twitching of the eye/eyelids can be associated with those.

anyway good luck. ice gave some nice advice. If you need anymore help then feel free to contact one of the dream guides(i.e the dudes in green)

i have read you should tell yourself over and over again as you are falling asleep "I WILL have a lucid dream tonight". or similar

problem is, I have a hard time falling asleep. I literally lay in bed for 3 hours before falling asleep. so I would have to repeat that phrase for 3 hours straight. heh, not happening.

Last night I went to bed @ 2am and didn't fall asleep until somewhere around 4:30am *i think*.

Only times I can fall asleep fast are if I'm extremly tired from doing work, or if I stay up for like 48 hours. See I don't have a job and I don't go to school so I don't do a lot of work during the day that would make me tired. I think *maybe* that's why I can never fall asleep. maybe my pillows are in a bad position. Maybe I'm laying wrong?

      Okay, firstly:
      YOU NEED SLEEP.
Going to bed at 2AM is _not_ going to help. You need to be getting enough sleep. That ( and dream recall ) are #1!
      Good luck!

i get the sleep, I wake up at like noon or sometimes as late as 3 pm

it's just I can't fall asleep. If I were to go to bed and close my eyes @ like 10pm, I will just lay there and won't actually fall asleep until like 1 am

but I go to bed @ 1:30 am last night and didn't actually fall asleep until somewhere around 4am

Hey! I'm glad I'm not the only one that experienced this... when I was first trying to learn to LD I got HemiSync and learned all about the brainwave patterns and binaural beats, etc. Anyway, I listened to one of their lucid dreaming tracks and he counted to 20, saying that at 20 I'd be in an LD. Well, I was fully awake and come 20, my heart rate went wild, my eyes were going berserk, and my body tensed. This happened every time I tried (some 10 more times). It's placebo, the mind has HUGE control over bodily functionality. Essentially, if your brain knows the symptoms, your body can assimilate them. This includes assimilating REM. I was familiar with the symptoms of dream sleep and my autonomic nervous system did the rest.
There was once this girl who thought she was pregnant, and she apprehended so much to tell her parents that she began to get a swelling stomache, morning sickness, and skipped periods... she went to the doctor and he said she was not pregnant, but that she was experiencing placebo... it's crazy the tricks your mind can plan on you!
