      Music Initiated Lucid Dream

Depending on what style of music I listen to, with headphones on at low volume, it can effect the outcome of my dreams.

For example if I listen to dark ambient music I will have dark dreams. But if I listen to happy melodic music I have happy dreams. When I try this the dreams are ussually extremely trippy, but the music has to be on a very low volume so it helps me fall asleep.

The music I use is never harsh sounding but only soft sounding and barely audible. I believe this kind of experiment falls in with the tutorial ,"Brainwave Entrainment for Lucid Dreams", mentioned on this website, but with a twist.

Anyone else ever tried this experiment?

I'd really like to try this, but I can never seem to fall asleep with headphones on. When I say headphones, I have Westone UM2's. For those not in the know, they're IEM's that actually fit snuggly into the shape of the outer ear, so should be fine to sleep with. But I can't. Maybe it's just a question of becoming accustomed to having them in. I have some Sunn O))) and Lustmord lined up for the day I can use them...

Comfortable headphones are a must. I have these ones that fit over my ears and they are really comfortable to the point that I don't even notice I am wearing them.

I've tried this experiment with Lustmord by the way, and I had some really strange dreams with his music. Steve Roach works well too.

I'm a light sleeper, so most noises will keep me awake, especially music. The only kind of music I can fall asleep to has to be without a distinct beat and without words. However, in the past I have had dreams where music has affected them. Up until I was twelve, my sister and I shared a bedroom and she perferred to sleep with the radio on. My very first flying dream was, I believe, contributed to the song "I Believe I Can Fly" because I was doing this... flying routine to it.

Another time I had gone to sleep with a song on repeat (because it had comforted me after a nightmare) and later I was performing it with another guy.

I wish I could sleep to music. It'd make for some interesting experiments.

Kudos for the high fidelity canal-phones.

Less kudos for the Sunn album

On a side note, a continous noise, for example a fan in a PC or a broken radio would be a great noise to concentrate on when trying to Wild, usually music get's me too excited to sleep

i dunno about you guys but sometimes i cant even get to sleep without noise. so i have like my fan on, and maybe a radio too. but if i go to sleep with music, its gotta be to Rage Against the Machine. or i guess 311, there pretty diverse.

I don't know how you can go to sleep with heavy music on...

The only times I've ever been able to manage music sleeping is with stuff like Enya, Air, Acoustic Alchemy, and possibly Sigor Ros. Even then I had to have the volume on really quiet.

I agree in terms of bands like Rage etc... but slow doomy-sludgy stuff I find quite soporific, at reasonable volumes obviously.

I love putting on headphones and listning to the Moody Blues while I fall asleep. If I don't get lucid, at least I will have some way awesome dreams.

yeah...it only works if its soft music and the volume is on really low. Sometimes you got to try it a few times before it works

trust me though, if you got just the right kind of ambient music and really comfortable headphones it is really wild when you fall asleep and become lucid, really trippy man

Something similar has happened to me by accident on a number of occasions. I have been in a chair (very tired) listening to music, either with head phones or on a stereo. And I will start to drift off, and I will start getting images that fit the music...sometimes profound abstract images (that make sense while im seeing them)....or more narrative type dreams. Interestingly they never involve me, its more like watching a movie, and the music i am listening to is the soundtrack. (Except the images fit the music, as opposed to the music fitting the imagines, obviously).

But really cool things happen if I know the music well enough to know what comes next in the music....the images i see will anticipate the changes of mood in the music. Say if Im listening to music that is really happy, and there is a sudden tension that appears in the music (scary, dark etc) the images might get scary before that change in the music comes in. For instance, If i am watching a person, in a narrative kind of situation, they might be happily walking along, jumping over logs or something, im time with the music. Then all of a sudden they will stop, and look scared, and the scenery might change, then bang, the music changes to a darker mood. So theres a constant interplay between the dream and the music.

The thing with these dreams i have, is they are not lucid dreams at all. They usually very vague and hard to make out, and I usually forget everything the moment I wake from this light state of sleep. Aslo, I have no control of what happens, the music decides what happens. Even still, I though it might be interesting to share my experiences.

What if you'd place some speakers near your bed and download an alarm clock program that automatically plays some mp3 so you don't have to wake up? (You'd have to have a laptop, or a pc that's close to your bed) ...For those that can't fall asleep with music on. Just set the alarm clock to play the desired mp3 like 3 or 5 hours after sleep.

Ahhh, the 555s sound good out of anything, you don't need an amp for those

Personally I have a pair of HD-497, I think they are the next step down in the range of open headphones.

yup, still good headphones though and could be used for the same purposes of dream enhancement if done properly.

I tried to sleep with headphones yesterday, but my mind would be just too focused on the words of the music(or something...) for me to fall asleep ^^'
That's odd, as I usually get into the music so much that I'm almost in a dream state! I think I should just download some random lucid track thingie that says stuff like "You're dreaming. Do a reality check!". And make it so that it plays after a few songs have passed and I'm almost asleep... I'm gonna try this tonight

I used to have a radio alarm clock and one time there wasn't any music playing when it went off, just some people speaking about dogs and books about dogs... I ended up dreaming about holding the pile of books that the people were talking about and a dog jumping on me(I think...), right before waking up XD
