      Bluetooth is driving me crazy...

Okay, does anyone know how this thing works? A friend and i are trying to figure out how to work it, and we can't. If we figure it out, we can send texts for free!!
so, if anyone knows anything about this, any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can't send text messages via blue tooth... not on any phone I've seen anyway, as it would maim thext money making industry.

However, if the two phones are Sony Erricsons, you can make a post it note (from the top, press 'more' then post note), then blue tooth the note to another phone.

AND bluetooth has very limited transmission range, only some metres, so being able to send text messages via bluetooth wouldn't be much of use.

nokia's are pants, very cheap phones.

Sadly nokia lock them down so bluetooth can do next to nothing. You can send files to your computer with their shitty software, or use a head set, but that's it.

Sony Erricsons can send anything to anything without support.

Hell, with no software at all I can connect my laptop to the internet with my T610....

Bluetooth is a heap of shit. I'd rather have a couple more wires or so to my headset than the whole 50cm wireless insecure brain-microwaving shebang.

My dad has had months and months of trouble trying to figure out how this 'Infamous' Bluetooth, he kept asking me all these questions i didn’t know how to answer so its a sore subject with me (lol).

I think the guy in the mobile phone shop managed to figure it out in about 5 minutes after my dad spent ages getting frustrated about it.

maybe i should do that then...take it into my local orange shop, and get them to figure it out...free texts does sound like a good idea...personally, i think anyone you text who is on the same network, you should get them free anyhow.
there seems to be a lot of talk about this headset thingy...do i need that then?

A head set is one of the prominant uses for bluetooth on mobiles, small and reletively cheap hands free kit that's wireless.

But like kaniaz said, bluetooth uses a shite protocol. If they rebuilt it with an IP based protocol, it would be a billion times more secure and be able to do a billion more things. It'd be a cheap and small version of wi-fi.

sounds to me like it's not really worth bothering with, at least, not in my case...i only use it for texting, and i don't do much of that either...well...not really.

It's a useful thing when the phone isn't locked down, and for drivers, bluetooth head sets are fantastic, but the technology itself is very young.

Well, I use the term loosely, nokias and sharps (not sure about motorola or other brands) have very limited bluetooth capabilities, far from what they should be able to do.

Take a simple image transfer for example, with two sony erricsons, I can take a picture with the camera and save it. I can then select 'send via bluetooth' and select to send it to the other phone.

The other phone displays a file tranfer request, and the owner says 'yes' to accept it.

The file is tranfered and now both phones have the photo that was taken.

A nokia however, doe snot have a send via bluetooth feature, and will refuse any incomming requests.

Therefore, if you want your friend to have the photo, you have to use Multimedia text messeging and pay extortionate fees.

Thus nokia and the network's coffers become a little fuller with your money.

On a similar thing, if I have my phone in range of my laptop, my laptop will automaticly pick it up as a bluetooth modem, and be able to dial up to the internet.

A nokia cannot do this unless you install the Nokia software suite. Then you can transfer files and conenct to the internet.

All done to keep Nokia in control of what you do with your phone.

It was the same with infra red on nokia's too, although you could dial up with them, you could do file transfers or anything useful like that.

For the mainstream phones like nokia, bluetooth is a selling point, not a feature.

yikes, think i'll leave it alone then!!
and my phone doesn't take pictures...it's not that modern, i mean, it's only a couple of years old, but in phone terms that is ancient!!

Yeah, it's the age-old "I MUST DOMINATE IT!" ideals. Then again I think mobiles are crap too.
