      Help Me Please (Tech stuff)

Trying to share files over two comps, got the right cables, no router, directly linked. Both using XP Home.

      Help??

      1. Are you using a cross-over ethernet cable? If not, then that's your problem.

      2. You have to enable file sharing on the computers (Network Connections->select proper connection->properties).

you can probably modify the cable yourself--if you don't mind sacrificing it--instead of running out and buying a cross-over cable. i'm sure there's a schematic on the internet; you only need to swap two wires.

I used to have an IPX cable that I would use.

You plug them in the back, then you could try the following...

      Use Windows Home's Weird Wizard
      1) Open the Control Panel.
      2) Double click network connections.
      3) Click \"create a new connection\" on the sidepanel and follow the wizard's instructions.
      4) Try this on both computers, perhaps?
      [/b]
See if it appears in the network panel
      1) Open the Control Panel.
      2) Double click network connections.
      3) Veify if your network device is on that screen. Check it isn't disabled for some reason.[/b]
Are you *sure* they aren't connected?
      1) Click 'start' and press 'My network places' (\"spiffy\" menu required\")
      2) Click View Workgroup Computers on the sidebar.
      3) Now click \"Microsoft Windows Network\" on the sidebar.
      4) You should have one workgroup (default MSHOME), if more than one, change one computers workgroup to be the same as the other ones
      [/b]
      Check the IP Addreses assigned.
      1) Click 'start' and press 'run'.
      2) Type in \"conf\" (minus the quotes) and press enter.
      3) This'll start netmeeting, once started, click \"help\" then \"about windows netmeeting\".
      4) At the bottom are some IP addresses. Do this on both computers, and make a note of them.
      5) Try pinging a computer with the IP address you got.
      [/b]
      Use the command line
      1) Click 'start' and press 'run'.
      2) Type in \"cmd\" (minus the quotes) and press enter.
      3) This'll start the command console. From here, type \"net view\" (minus the quotes) and see if the computers both appear.
      4) Try pinging from here, by typing \"ping <ip address/name of computer>\", minus the quotes. This will ping the other computer 4 times.
      [/b]
      Turn off firewalls
      1) Turn off any firewalls running (ex: zonealarm)
      2) Turn off the windows firewall, if started. Follow steps below.
      3) Press 'start', click 'network connections'.
      4) Right click the network device you're using to connect both of them, and press \"properties\".
      5) Go to the \"advanced\" tab.
      6) Uncheck the \"internet connection firewall\" checkbox if checked.
      7) Repeat this for both computers.
      [/b]
      \"Repair\" the connections
      1) Press 'start' and click 'my network connections'.
      2) Right click the network device you're using to connect both of them, and press \"repair\" on the sidebar.
      [/b]
I'm not exactly an Windows expert, nor am I verifed, so if this messes up your computer, it isn't my fault You've probably done half of the steps, but sometimes trying them again magically fixes something

for sure you have a cross-over cable? it's a special kind of ethernet cable that is required when a hub/router is not present. forgive me if i'm being condescending and you were aware of that already.

also...although i honestly don't know if it's important, but, do the two computers have identical workgroup names? i believe that was once important with older versions of windows; don't know for sure whether it's really that relevant in XP.

I finally got it working.. the simple solution was that the ethernet card on one comp was disabled for some reason (on dial up, so I assume it simply wasn't in use before).

Alright, having problems again. Essentially, I am just trying to play Diablo over a network. Here's what's going on:

Two comps hooked together with cross-over ethernet cable.
Network setup and comps can share files (have tested and it works succesfully).
However, they cannot ping each other. I assume this is what is causing the game to not work.
Only additional protocalls added is the IPX protocall.
      Both using XP home.
      Both ethernet cards active.
IP's are: 192.168.0.1 and the same but with 2 at the end
Subnet masks are the same at: 255.255.255.0

      What else is there??

hrm. you might have to disable the firewall on the two computers. perhaps it is blocking necessary ports? to do so, right click on the connection and choose "properties." you'll figure it out from there.

No firewall up, and no virus software has ever even been on either of these comps. :-
