      LOST in Encryption

      OK, I know that the number sequence on ABC's hit show LOST have been discussed to death, and have already been dissected and put in their place mathematically and such, but I had a hypothesis for "cracking the code" as it were, and I was wondering if someone who's brain wasn't fried for the day could help me out.

      The first thing that came to mind was my frequent tendency to encode things using the phone-button alphanumeric code, which is as follows:

      1 = [nothing; space(?)]
      2 = a/b/c
      3 = d/e/f
      4 = g/h/i
      5 = j/k/l
      6 = m/n/o
      7 = p/q/r/s
      8 = t/u/v
      9 = w/x/y/z

      Now, given that, can some sort of meaningful letter sequence be derived from this number sequence?

      4 8 15 16 23 42

      -- or possibly --

      4 8 1 5 1 6 2 3 4 2

      ...?

      Edit: I realize that any combination of the letters chosen will not make any sense -- but that is because after a certain combination is reached, it will take another round of decryption (or possibly a third, and perhaps even some unscrambling) to make sense out of the sequence.

      Yeah, that's not exactly the same thing, but thanks for trying, scorpi!

      After 1 minute of analysis, I took the ten letters, gave them their alphabetic value (A = 1, B = 2...) and then unscrambled

      8 4 1 5 1 6 2 3 4 2 = D H A E A F B C D B
      into BEACH DAD BF (boyfriend). I haven't watched the show, but those three words are clues for an event sometime in the future, well that's my guess at least.

      Er...that's cool, Distant -- though not exactly the kind of message I was looking for.

      Well 108 becomes significant later, its the product of all six numbers added. 108 in days is also April 18th, I only know that because ironically its my birthday

      Not to the point, but for Vanilla Sky fans to find amusing; in Season 2 a company called Hanso is mentioned as working on "Life Extension" and September 22nd, the day Lost premiered, is also David Aames birthday...

      I work the graveyard shift, and haven't had a working television in six months. This is the first time I've heard mention of any such number sequence, but I guess I'll throw my brain at it. What context was the sequece presented in? Why are you not sure if the numbers should be single- or double-digit? Anything you can tell me about it would help, I think.

      My theory is actually separate from the television context, so I don't think it should matter. The show focuses on the sequence -- including the double-digits -- to an extent, in that they are mystical, and they are the root cause of much of the fortune and misfortune in the show's ongoing plot, but that's it.

      I believe strongly that the numbers should be interpreted all as single digits, since, as I hypothesized, as the number one, which appears twice, has no value according to the system I'm using, I imagine it represents a space, a key separation between the other values.

      Thanks a ton, O-Ni. I'm definitely gonna owe ya.

      I'm not good at code breaking, but this seams to be a great place to discuss Lost, which is on tonight by the way!

      The numbers should decode into something significant; the island holds many mysteries. And now someone has to type the code into a computer every 108 minutes.

      Dad? Beach? Those are both relavent to the show! But...it doesn't mean anything altogether....

      Personally, I think that they're just numbers.

      Rock on Tiki muse! OK!

      Sober.

      Forgot to say, was in a bit of a hurry, that those are just the different in-order variations. Without the spaces. Pure bruteforce, so there are duplicates in there. Would have to do it differently to also get all permutations.

      Oh, and you're welcome
