Yeah. Well, I'm not alcoholic or anything. Not much, anyway, but I thought it would be interesting to see what people on DV prefer to drink. Why?

Well, actually, truth be told, I just wanted to make a big-ass poll, but, this seems to be a good a topic as any. So... yeah. What do you drink? Tell us!

For me it's Stout, shiraz and vodka. I love my shiraz, and I love big heady stouts. As for vodka... IF it is good vodka, REALLY good, I like it more than liqueur.

      Vodka!? Yuck!

The only reason anybody drinks Vodka is because they think they can drink it secretly without it showing up on their breath. It tastes medicinal. Any watered down ethyl would taste the same.

I read somewhere or saw a movie in which some Cop had said that he appreciates the cops who don't drink Vodka -- it shows that they don't think everybody else is stupid. That is that people will know when one is sneeking a drink. One can't really hide such a thing.

Yeah, Leo, I'd agree with you about Vodka in most cases. But, a really good vodka, I really, honestly enjoy.

BTW, pleased to see you're a scotch man.

Well, you may well have caught me on this one (congratulations). I may never have, in my entire life, tasted a Premium Vodka. Whenever I have found myself at well supplied open bars, or been wealthy enough to splurge, I have always gone toward the Scotches or the Single Malt Wiskeys (Rye... hard to find nowadays).

Good poll. I didn't have much of a clue when it came to the wine, for me its red, or white lol. And I like vodka.

EDIT: I better say what I voted for...

I usually drink lager, whatever's cheapest to be honest! I do like Belgian beers actually. They're so strong and you hardly notice it because they taste so good! Expensive though. I also just found out I like John Smith's, it's really smooth mmm - doesn't bite like some nat's piss lagers, what's that - bitter?

I voted for Sauvignon Blanc because I know it's white and I prefer white to red...

I went for vodka because I'm boring and I always buy it. If you mix it with Ribena (and dilute it a bit) you can't taste it! muhahaa, good to get smashed.

I love ales. My favorites keep changing because I like to keep trying all different kinds. I'm partial to the hoppiness of a good pale ale however. Though lately I've been getting into hefeweizens, which would be my 2nd favorite beer for now.

I selected "other" for wines because my favorite is Bordeaux. Even though it does contain cabernet sauvignon, it's generally made from a blend of other grapes as well. My 2nd favorite wine is Barolo, or any Nebbiolo really. My favorite white is Chablis (white burgundy/chardonnay).

I'm not a connisseour of the hard stuff, so I just like rum because I can make fun things like frozen pina coladas and daiquiris when it gets real hot down here in TexASS.

      cool poll

Favorite type of beer: Lager - a good can of stella (or wife-beater as its affectionate local name)

Wine: None - I'm only 15 so I haven't really got into drinking wine yet. I really can't tell a lot of difference between one wine and another. They all seem pretty similar to me.

Favorite type of spirit: Scotch whisky. I've been sneaking a bit from my dad's little stash every now and then since I was about seven years old, and it's grown on me.

Adopted Megabenman although he disappeared a while ago.

I chose bitter beers because I love the strong flavors. Not a lot of alcohol in bitters though. I remember I was sitting at the bar after a bitter kick, then decided to switch beers. I chose a strong dark ale and it threw me for a loop.

I wish I knew more about wine, but I only know the generic differences between the main styles. For a truly remarkable wine you generally have to pay the price. I chose Merlot because I like the dryness of it.

I may be the only person to choose Gin. I was stuck between Gin and Brandy, but chose Gin because that's what is in my freezer. There is just such a flavor punch in it. Love the Cognac too. Jager counts too, doesn't it?

As for Vodka. I like it because it is so clean non abrasive.

I'm a pretty devout vodka man. Sorry Leo
      Whiskey is second best.
Tequila is pretty much the worst tasting shit ever. But it's not on the poll anyway.

Don't have much opinion on the other two. I hate beer and I never drink wine.

      Jagermeister is considered liquer, right?

I'll drink pretty much any kind of beer.

Wine I voted reisling just because it's the last one I had. It's all good though, well for the most part.

Jager's liqueur. It's a herbal liqueur, made (originally) for medicinal purposes, I believe. It's good stuff. I'm trying to track down the recipe for the combination of herbs and spices so I can make my own. Besides vodka and scotch, Jager would be one of my favourite spirits, along with a few other liqueurs.

BTW, I am somewhat... disappointed to see SEVEN people say "None" for favourite wine... I live in NZ, one of the world's most respected wine producing countries, so, luckily I have access to a large range of top-quality wines (Oz and Kiwi) at reasonable prices... So... I suppose I'm a bit biased when it comes to wine... but I LURVE my syrah...

Wine can come across as fairly elitist, requiring one to do a hefty amount of research on the topic before trying, much less enjoying wine drinking. And wine consumption can also be misinterpreted as being on the higher budget end, so it's understandable that it turns people off right from the get go. I myself didn't even try wine until after I started culinary school, and that was because I became interested after the segment that focused on wine study.

That said, I highly urge those of you who have never given wine much thought, to investigate it a little bit then try a bottle that's not expensive, yet not the cheapo Strawberry Hill or Mogen David. I'd go for something in the range of $6-$8 a bottle. Which is the price of a decent 6-pack of beer.

And if it's an issue of alcohol content, well looky here:

1 bottle of wine: 25 fl oz @ 13% alcohol by volume = 3.25 fl oz of alcohol
1 6-pack of beer: 72 fl oz @ 5% alcohol by volume = 3.6 fl oz of alcohol

So the beer has a bit more alcohol, true, but you have to drink almost 3 times as much water to get to it. (I used average percentages for the alcohol, because most of the wimes I buy are around 13%, and 5% is standard for beers like Bud and Coors and crap).

I'm not saying wine is better. On a hot day, I'd definitely go for a cold brew over a glass of room-temperature Merlot. But to know more is to be able to enjoy a wider selection of alcoholic beverages, making you a more well-rounded person (in more ways than one ).

      Cheers,

      and cheers.

I only drink rarely since it makes me ill 100% of the time - it's like I've got some sort of weird allergy to alcohol or something. Ah well, I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing...

      But...
      Favorite beer - Killian's.
      Don't like wine.
And mixed drink - either Rum and Coke, or Captian and Coke.

      alcohol doesn't taste good IMO.

you could give the finest wine, or scotch, or whatever to a kid and they'd spit the shit out and ask for a sodie-pop. i can't be bothered "acquiring" a taste for booze that costs a day's wages, or pretend i drink to be sophisticated.

as a borderline alchoholic, i drink to get drunk.

I hardly ever drink. And when I do I don't overdo it. I just drink untill I feel a nice gentle buzz.

      Oh let's see here...

Things have changed since I moved to Arizona from Wisconsin (the home of beer and cheese), so I'll categorize it that way. Take it into consideration that i am a very poor college student at the moment.

      Arizona
      Beer: Coors original
Wine: mostly any shiraz, but for now Carlos Rossi burgandy (Barf-a-roo&#33
      Booze: can't afford it

      Wisconsin
Beer: Pabst! PBR me all the way!
      Wine: red
      Booze: I likes me gin!

Neat! I'm sure I won't shut up about it either next week during my vacation back to "Wisco." Although, it is kind of embarrassing I didn't already know that.
