Talking about backwards, I think the Japanese format is 06/09/26.

DD/MM/YY. In order of granuality. Anything else is just stupid (says the guy who still lives in England where everyone drives on the left).

      dd/mm/yyyy makes the most sense
it's in increasing amounts, with days being shortest at the front, and years at the end

however for sorting a list of dates
the international date format (yyyy/mm/dd) makes more sense
as this can be sorted correctly on spreadsheets, etc.

90% of people are right handed
historically, you passed other horse riders on the left so your sword arm was the closest arm to them

driving on the left makes more sense even today, tho

pedestrians crossing a road look right (looking at lane nearest them), then left (lane furthest from them) before crossing

Lmao, he's right. There's no logic in the way the yanks do it. I wonder why they bothered reversing it in the first place when they first colonized America.

Well 9/26/06 makes sense in one way because when I say that the date I say " September 26, 2006" from left to right. But that's not really a good argument because just as many probably say "The 26th of September 2006"
      Actually September 26, 2006 sounds better. I vote 9/26/06.

Granuality? Heh, so do you arrange your undies (or "knickers") in the drawer above your shirts and pants or below, just above the sock drawer?

yeah, dd/mm/yy makes the most sense...we americans are just retarded[/b]
I don't know if we're retarded, I think we just like to celebrate the deep rooted idea of individualism and freedom that our country is founded on. If the rest of the world were to conform to our "style", I suppose we'd probably just find some other unique way of expressing our dates.

As far as I know, the DD/MM/YYYY is more a military thing than anything else.

When asked, in the military, what day it is, you would answer "27, September, 2006."

It makes sense either way you say it:

"The 27th day of September, 2006"
      27/09/2006

      "September the 27th, 2006"
      09/27/2006

I don't really think it matters.

When I write dates longhand I sometimes use 27, September, 2006. But when using numbers only I write 9/27/06. I don't think it really matters, however I do think there should be some kind of rule as to the way they are written to differentiate. Let's say it's April 5, 2006. That could either be 04/05/06 or 05/04/06. The problem being the latter could also be interpreted as May 4th.

While we are on the topic I think America should probably go for the metric system. I, being a sciency-geeky type person prefer the metric system. It makes much more sense to me to have 1000 meters in a kilometer and 1000 milliliters in a liter than it does to have 5280 feet in a mile and 16 cups in a gallon. Of course since the infrastructure is already in place it is pretty complicated to change it. What with road signs and speed limit signs and all kinds of signs and maps and recipes and etc.

'cos that's what I'm used to round here and I can't think of any reason why it'd be sensible any other way round.

That said, us Britons refer to the WTC attacks as "9/11", not "11/9". I shall make a conscious effort to refer to it latter way round now to preserve Her Majesty's standards.

Do you remember 11/9? God that was awful...

Yeah. Why can't you just use the metric system like every sane person?
