Al Jazeera (English) launches in the UK today
Now we can get news according to both sides

This can only be a good thing
as long as it keeps it's unbiased approach

This, coupled with the BBC should be quite interesting

I read about that too. I think it will be interesting to see how they do reports, in which way they represent things differently because of their thinking etc. I guess it will be very controverse to what we know ...

Do you know if it's just receivable by refreshing the channels on TV? Or do I need Satellite connection?
Or is it even on the Net?

This is a step forward. But Al Jazeera as I know it is owned by one person. They are media biased, like Fox news squired.
It is the only source. Just not good.

I used to read the Al Jazeera website a bit, seeing as I'm additcted to the news. In my experience it was biased, but it might have changed now. It is good to get the other side of many stories, though, and it can only be a good thing to have another source of news.

I watched a documentary a while back, called "Control Room", about Al Jazeera. Fascinating, included perspectives from Al Jazeera reporters, US Army Public Relations guy, all very neutral, objective, and sensible.

As far as Al Jazeera goes: Yes, they are biased. Any news company has to cater to the audience to which it provides its coverage. The media is never neutral. Al Jazeera is biased in the same way that Fox is biased, or for that matter, any other media organisation.

Is this some sort of news station based around the controversies in the Middle East? And you're going to believe for a second it's not biased either way? OHO!

Taking into account the two media sources, FOX and al jazeera. Although both are blatantly biased, doesn't aljazeera only have one source of reference?
For example FOX news may have a topic at hand that has an opposing view. At least someone to rebut. Even though it seems apparent what view the station holds.

But doesn't al jazeera only report from one side?

Personally, I always skip to the "world" section of newspapers because domestic issues are usually so boring. For that reason, Al Jazeera seems very attractive indeed, with it's global scope. Looks like it might be a good watch, I've only terresteral though.

Ever actually WATCHED al jazeera, Howetzer? Other than the clips that CNN and Fox recycles, and are hardly representative?

No. any information is just from what I have read. That is why I asked if they were as one sided as they are made out to be.

Other than the clips that CNN and Fox recycles, and are hardly representative? [/b]
      What do you mean?

What I meant by the second sentence was rather

"(Other than the clips that CNN and Fox recycle, which are hardly representative.)"

I was tired, and I screwed the words and punctuation up.

As for Al Jazeera, Howie, I HIGHLY reccommend you get out and wacth a documentary called "Control Room". It's about Al Jazeera, in English, and should be available from your local video store. It's extremely good, one of the better documentaries I've seen.

      I will do that.
I have seen it on the shelf and was not sure if I wanted to go there.
Every time I go out to get a movie I come back with What the bleep do we know or Why we fight.... Now my wife won't let me pick out movies.

      HAHA!!!

Seriously, though, it's very good. Neutral, too. Dunno who it's made by, but, it's very good. Suprisongly non-biassed in either direction.

I thought I posted this already???

I watched it several nights ago. (Brooke, my wife..fell asleep. )
      Anyway. It was good.
I really see how it would be difficult for them to do what they have. Many obstacles in front of them
I still am dubious of any media. I don't take anything they say with much weight.
They are always walking this tight rope to see who can get in on the news first. Only later to find out that much of the information gathered was incorrect.
Radio, news, new papers. They all are like that.
They are a good source for information, just remain open to several sources and don't believe everything you read.
      (~except this post. )

      Don't you agree?

Its an unfortunate reality that all news sources are biased to some extent, CNN especially. But I suppose until we can have the information presented in some way that doesn't involve humans we will never see unbiased news. Its just a matter of receiving the information and thinking on your own about it as opposed to allowing the pundits to decide for you.

      Yeah, I agree. Definately.

I watched Fox News last night, actually - we get it late at night on one of the more obscure channels here, "Prime". And...

Scary. I'm watching it, and, I just can't believe it. I was truly scared. It was so slanted, so blatantly skewed and politically charged, hiding it all beneath a thin veneer of neutrality.

CNN is okay but somewhat biassed and untrustworthy. But FOX is just - hell. The antichrist of news media.
