Unhappy Has Your Pet Ever Had A Stroke!?

I'm so scared. =( One minute my little doggie was just fine...and the next...the whole right side of his body just stopped working. His leg and paw just don't work! I'm absolutely terrified. My mom said she thinks he's had a stroke. *cries* He can barely sit up, and can't really walk at all without falling over. It breaks my fucking heart. My little angel. =( I hate having to wait until tomorrow to take him to the vet. I'm so afraid he'll die sometime in the night. He's asleep with my mom now but I want to go and be with him, just in case. I think I've been secretly fearing this day for the last 14 years.

But my question to all of you...has your dog or other pet ever had a stroke? And how did you know? Can they recover from this sort of thing? Would he be able to use his paw again? I mean, if he can't walk, we'll certainly have to put him down. *cries* I can't bare it.

I'm not ready to say goodbye yet. =(

If animals are anyway like humans
Then your dog will be able to overcome it. and become stronger in the process
Last month my cat was siting in a corner drooling from the mouth, i think she was really sick, i was a little afraid of what was wrong, but shes back to normal now, super hyper and such. anyways i hope your dog gets better.

I had a horse that apparently had a stroke, though one vet was saying it was impossible for horses to have them, while others were saying it was. In time the guy got his motion back again, but was left blind. :/ It wasr all bad for him though, he lived out the rest of his years as a field companion for young horses, which he loved.

Obviously your best course of action would be to take your dog to the vet tommorow like you said, they're the experts. He most likely has a large chance of getting through this, dogs can also function quite with one of its limbs not working, so don't worry about that.

My heart is out with yoiu and your dog, I wish him all the safety in the world.

      Damn, thats terrible news
I've never had this happen to any of my pets, i just read this and thought it might bring a bit of hope:

stroke is not as debilitating for dogs as it can be for people. Most dogs recover in several weeks. This recovery will depend on the severity of the dog's stroke and how much damage was done, but the potential for recovery is good news for the dog owner. The dog generally recovers most of her motor functions and movement with time and patience, but behavior may be slightly altered
I really hope your dog gets better soon nina.

Thanks guys...all your posts have made me feel a bit better, I'm starting to hope for the best now, instead of the worst. I thought for sure we'd have to put him down. But now I'm going to be optimistic...and hope that he will recover.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Nina! Like the others said, a stroke is not necessarily a death sentence, so try not to worry so much until you know more after the vet visit tomorrow. Project positive thoughts.

Please let us know what the vet says.

He's doing better today...we put him on pain meds (he's already been on steroids for awhile now yeesh) but at least he's trying to walk and sorta limping around and not just laying there like a little lump like last night. I think he's going to be ok. *fingers crossed*

I hope your pup get better. I'm so sorry. I get worried about my doggies to...I honestly don't know what I'll do if anything happens to my dogs. I mean, death is inevitable eventually for everything, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to say goodbye.

Thanks hun! He's going to be ok. =) We don't really know what exactly happened to him...but he is walking fine now, just a little limp. Jeez I was soooo scared. I'm really not ready to let him go yet. Hopefully we'll have a few more years together.

Thanks hun. I still remember when you're little one had to go, so I know you can understand how scared I was.
