      Screaming Frogs, fact or fiction

      Hi gang,

My son showed me a series of video's from Youtube this weekend. The all featured a frog that screamed when scared. It looked like either a Green Frog or a Bullfrog. I've not had a lot of luck determining whether this is fact or fiction. You can find the videos on your tube or by googling "screaming frog".

We have enough members from all over the United States to run this one down.

Have any of you ever seen a "Screaming Frog" in real life? I'd really like to see one of these, they are way cool!

Wow.. I had no idea frogs could make a noise like that (kinda sounds like a pissed off cat).

I've never seen a "screaming frog" in real life but I think it's fact per the youtubes I looked at.

Looks real to me. The scream wasn't a "scared" scream, though. The scream is supposed to scare off predators, evidently.

Yeah Xaqaria, that is one of the first places I looked. I've caught green frogs before, but still have never heard one scream. Wiki states that they rarely scream when captured.

Their range is the eastern US which is the range of the average DV member as well.

These are real. At least I think David Attenborough said so, and I believe anything he says. In any case, I watch plenty of animal shows and have heard the term before.

I feel sorry for this one... it sounds really scared. http://youtube.com/watch?v=U4TBRcPwbL4

I woke up one night when my kids were babies to the most unearthly screaming coming from downstairs. I thought one of the boys was being murdered or something! When I turned on the light I saw my two cats happily torturing a large frog who was screaming in terror. I had never heard frogs scream. I thought they just said "ribbit".

I've had toads make a small noise when I pick them up before. I imagine if they would open their mouths it would be much louder. I wonder is screaming a learned behavior?

If you placed a "screamer" in the pond with other frogs, would they learn it and pass it down to future generations? Toads "croak" very loudly with their mouths closed.
