Adam, maybe you should find a different dentist who accepts your insurance (you guys have the same type of health insurance system, right?), and a dentist who uses more analgesia (pain management), because a dental procedure should not hurt like you described. No wonder you don't want to go back! A good dentist should either use good local blocks or just put you out completely if the procedure is going to be too painful (think having your wisdom teeth out). Dentists that don't use enough analgesia are setting their patients up to be afraid to go back for fear of more pain, therefore letting the problem get much worse before actually making an appointment.
So yeah, I'd find a different dentist and make an appointment asap. Let us know how it goes!
