      Ouch!!!

OMG - I was eating something yesterday and I got this sharp pain in my back tooth, and I didn't think anything of it, but today, well now actually I am eating dinner and got the same pain again...

Please someone lie to tell me I don't need to go a dentist for a filling I have never had to have one before and have been told they hurt a lot! I hope its just sensitive for what ever reason, and hey maybe it will get better by itself?

I have never needed one before, does it seem like I might have a cavity? OMG I thought my teeth were strong, I clean everyday, how can I make it better?

Listen mate, to be quite honest with you i think its quite possible that its nothing. I have been through brief periods where one of my teeth has really hurt when i apply pressure to it when biting down on food. It can last for days, not had it recently but it was ages ago, it can be common and happen alot sometimes. Just take it easy, brush your teeth and if it lasts an abnormal amount of time, then consider seeing your dentist. Its probably nothing mate.

If it lasts more than a week, I suggest seeing a dentist. Fillings hurt, but it only hurts during the operation, there are no aftereffects, like having a sensitive tooth for 2 weeks. I had my first and only filling when I was 8 or 9, and yes, it hurt, but I got through it with ease. You're 25 years old and unless you're weak, you should be able to take a bit of pain.

Sorry Adam, I won't lie to you when it's about your health. Tooth pain is not normal. Except for if you are really sensitive to hot or cold. But other than that, if you are experiencing recurring tooth pain, you NEED to have it checked out. It could be an abscess starting, and you don't want to wait a week to have it looked at. Don't wait and go to the damn dentist!!

Well... hehehe it would be easy for me to tell you to go to the dentist, but ya know, I too have had tooth pains. My teeth have been really weird actually. There were times when I had pain in one spot when eating/drinking something hot/cold.. and then, get this, there were times when I found little black holes in one or two teeth! I actually did point those out to the dentist and she said not to worry about it. Well the point is, the tooth pain went away and the black hole things went away as well.

Can you look at your tooth to see if there is a cavity? I've never had one either so I don't know what it would look like...

And sadly, brushing your teeth and flossing and stuff doesn't guarantee freedom from any of this.

Ah man, well if after the weekend it is doing it I will see a dentist. It only happened twice when eating, it wasn't a constant pain, just one quick sharp pain then went away

I have had painful surgery before... Like I couldn't describe. It's just the time, and my dentist is private so I have to pay for it

Guys, your dentists must be pretty lousy. Feelings aren't supposed to be painful at all, just a tiny little stab when the local anesthesia injection is made, after that you feel no pain there.
But sometimes you need a more serious treatment than a feeling, which are more painful, but that is usually not the case.
In any case, I agree with Lucid Seeker, sometimes it heals by itself, so wait a few days, and if it dosn't get better go to a dentist.

Depends on what kind of pain it is.
If the pain is on contact, that is, you feel it when chewing with that tooth and whatnot, then it's likely to be a cavity, which requires a filling.
But if it's a constant nagging pain then it's more likely to be a piece of food stuck between your teeth in a spot you can't get it out of and don't feel it yourself, hence it got stuck there and is decomposing, causing rot or whatever it is, which in turn causes the pain.

I've had both so, aye, just go to the dentist and see what it is. What people say hurts is the drilling that comes before the filling is inserted. But, hey, it hurts because your tooth hurts. The cavity or whatnot is there because of decay of some sort, which is hurting. So if you have the pain while chewing with that tooth, it's only natural that it'll hurt when that decaying part is being drilled and that decay removed.

So what would you prefer: a constantly aching tooth or a bit of that same ache + slightly unpleasant smell from when drilling resulting in no pain at all afterwards?
Just have to sit it out!

Adam, maybe you should find a different dentist who accepts your insurance (you guys have the same type of health insurance system, right?), and a dentist who uses more analgesia (pain management), because a dental procedure should not hurt like you described. No wonder you don't want to go back! A good dentist should either use good local blocks or just put you out completely if the procedure is going to be too painful (think having your wisdom teeth out). Dentists that don't use enough analgesia are setting their patients up to be afraid to go back for fear of more pain, therefore letting the problem get much worse before actually making an appointment.

So yeah, I'd find a different dentist and make an appointment asap. Let us know how it goes!

Ahh.. so that's where the real pain comes in! LOL!

Adam, going to the dentist can be expensive (and "slightly" painful) but believe me.. it beats an aching mouth!

Here's hoping the pain just goes away on it's own!

Fillings are nothing to worry about. It shouldn't hurt at all.

I've had gum surgery (twice!). Now that's painful!

Cavity fillings are far less painful than tooth extractions (coming from a guy who had 9 of them)...

Honestly Adam, I wouldn't worry about it. I sometimes get pains in my teeth for a while. When I do I just make extra sure I brush my teeth a lot better and it goes away. Although saying that someone I know recently had a massive filling put in where the inside of her tooth had rotted away, the entry hole was small but it expanded inside; rather like a bulb. But that was because she didn't clean her retainer properly.

So that's my considered verdict... go brush your teeth some more.

Accepts my insurance? What insurance?? We don't really have that here - We have the great NHS - which is free doctor/dentist etc. But I pay for Private care because I am a snob and you are supposed to get a better, quicker service. I have never had to have any work done on my teeth so cannot comment on previous work, because there never has been any. I have my checkups and stuff and I am always okay.

My mouth doesn't ache, and doesn't hurt when chewing food either. There have been two occasions on seperate days when with one chew I got a sharp pain, that was it. I have eaten today and nothing, and likewise all of yesterday, until dinner I got this one sharp pain with one chew and then it went again.. I am going to hang fire I think, then if it keeps coming back I will caugh up the one million dollars they want to have a look at my mouth lol.

Yeah I wasn't sure kind of healthcare system you guys run over there. We have health insurance that you usually get through your job by working full time. Sometimes, depending on the insurance plan your work has, you have to see if the doctor/dentist you want to go to accepts that particular insurance. If they don't, you have to pay out of pocket. But if they do accept it, usually you don't pay anything, or maybe a small co-pay like $10 and that's it. Same with prescriptions, usually prescriptions are covered by your insurance, unless you have a co-pay.

What's the NHS? You don't have to pay anything at all to go to the doctor/dentist? I'm curious how your system works.

Yeah the NHS is the National Health Service - Us tax payers pay for it, basically my taxes up to 40% of my wage is tax help fund the NHS. Which means EVERYONE regardless of whether you pay tax of not get free health and dental care. Basically everything is free that you could need. Prescriptions are free if you are at school and stuff.

It sucks because I would rather pay a premium for just me rather than fund everyone else incluing all the free loaders who are too lazy to get a job.

Our taxes also go to fund the state pension, which people again, get from the government when they retire, and like my private dentist I have a private pension too. It sucks over here...

Ah, I see. hmm, I don't think I would like that very much either - paying even for those people who don't work. Here, you are responsible for yourself, so if you don't work full time and get insurance through your work, you have to pay for your own insurance plan premiums, or just pay healthcare costs out of pocket, which are WAY more than you'd probably pay in insurance premiums, especially if you had an accident and needed hospitalization or something. Medical care is unbelievably unaffordable if you don't have insurance.

Sounds harsh, but if you dont have insurance and something happens you only have yourself to blame!!

I need to move my ass to the states, sounds cheaper

Whats your tax on wages out there? Any better than here?

Adam I have had a filling before only a year ago trust me it does not hurt at all...I was well nervous and the drill kinda freaked me out but its fine you dont even feel the pain

oh and im with you on the DAM tax! and to make things worse the NHS dentist arnt even free any more! plus you have to wait like forever to be seen its why I choose private for dentists....unfortunatly I cant afford private health care which means I have to spend 8 or 9 hours in the hospital or I had to wait 11 weeks for a dam scan lol

I wish we had health insurrance over here it would make things so much easier plus $10 does not sound much whats the £5 I could deal with that

I'm not sure what the percentages are, but the deductions on every paycheck are Federal Income Tax, Social Security Tax, Medicare Tax, Michigan State Income Tax, Dental, Medical, and 401K (retirement plan).
