      Learning Morse Code

Now that I have 11 days off, I have decided to finally learn morse code. I have tried many times but havn't stuck with it but I am going to do it this time. Does anyone else know morse code or have an amateur radio license?

Morse code is more prevalent than alot of people notice, such as the Rush song "YYZ". The main riff at the beginning is actually YYZ sent in morse code. Where all have you heard morse code at just throughout normal life?

Pretty much only in the amateur radio bands anymore.

W1AW (search for it) runs daily Morse drills, or at least they used to when the code was a requirement to get your amateur radio license. (I'm an Amateur Extra by the old system - call is WJ8I - though I'm not on the air at all anymore.)

      No - it isn't.

      . . . is EEE
      ... is S.

      And S is for Sissies.

Well all that I've bothered to learn is S.O.S., probably the most use you can get out of Morse code.

I've got that song on my computer. After listening to it on Guitar Hero II I thought it was an excellent song.

haha pj looks like you need to review the code a little. You seem to send ur d's as r's (unless you are wishing me "poor" luck)

I got my general license last spring after they got rid of the code requirement and my dad is getting an hf transceiver for xmas and I'm not much of a talker so I was hoping to learn the code. I'm KB3IPY btw. Just curious, did you use a straight key, a bug, or an electronic keyer?

Yeah - it's been over a decade since I have done anything with code - maybe longer. I'll bet I can still copy 50wpm or so though - maybe not send so easily. It's like learning music... you learn the rhythms and eventually entire words just sing out to you. The only way to get there is practice.

When I was online, I was a QRP nut - code only. I never even had a mic for many years, until somebody corrupted me with 2 meters.

I still have my station in storage. I should sell it - it isn't doing any good where it is.

I'll be glad if I can get it at 15 or 20wpm. At 50wpm it just sounds like random buzzing. I'm using the Koch morse software which has farnsworth so I'm gonna use that as well as trying the actual Koch way where u just learn it full speed with 2 characters then add 1 at a time. My problem right now is that when I hear a character I review it in my head as dots and dashes which I know is bad. I'm glad I have this break so I can try to internalize them better. I might even read the ARRL Extra book and see if I can upgrade before they get the new question bank around next June.

There's been a few songs with code in them. Didn't Kraftwerk have one? Radioactivity, was it?

You definitely should go for the Extra. There's no penalty for failing - or at least there didn't used to be. Having the additional privs is nice. When I took the test, it was either 30 or 35 wpm to pass the code bit for Extra.

I did it in three steps - novice first: KB8DCI, then kept that call for my next sitting when I passed everything through Advanced, and got WJ8I when I made Extra - all within one year.

I think it might have been 1982 - my first year sober.

Why am I not surprised by this?

      I remember "A"...I think: is it dot-dash?

All you really need to know is SOS, right: ...----...? I always figured if I used "OSO" someone would figure it out.

I memorized sign language when I was a kid too....all I remember is "I Love You" and the letter "J".

A worthy goal, TPV. I wish I would spend my time doing things like that sometimes instead of the things that I do do.

      Do do.

      Sorry I"ve had a couple.

The main thing that holds me back is my dad lol. We usually study and upgrade together but he could never get the code (he has no musical ability whatsoever) so we went for general after they dropped it. Maybe I'll just study on my own for Extra and get it though. I took the extra test when I went for general because they let you try the next higher one for free. I don't know how well I did and it could have been in another language as far as I was concerned.

I also have the ARRL cd set for learning morse code and each track introduces another character and then tests you a little so I will lay there in bed and listen to the beginning of each track to try to implant them all in my mind. I know all the letters I just can't copy them at a high speed because I'm at the lookup table in my mind stage. hopefully I will overcome that. Straight Key Night is coming up so I'll probably have a listen to that to get some practice and maybe even try to make a contact depending on how well I've done and if I have an antenna that works.

Here are some interesting links that I found about morse code in music:

      http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dmitris...orseMusic.html

      http://www.kempa.com/blog/archives/000059.html

      http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/...p/t-58298.html

      http://youtube.com/watch?v=YxQrPXPSVhQ

In the last link you can hear the morse code like effect best at the very end. To me it sounds like 2 different morse code messages being sent at once rather than one and the one link says that it is simply a keyboard effect.
