About the thumbs up/thumbs down rating system

Like the ones youtube uses for spam comments, or yahooanswers. Those are the only ones I'm familar with and frankly I find them ridiculous.

As you can probably guess I get some bad ones every now and then. Don't get me wrong I think its a great idea but it should be mandatory to leave a comment about the vote, because well... people have a habit of abusing it.

If I truly did something wrong, someone at least tell me what I did so I can do better. And that's my two cents.

The thing about the thumbs rating system is that it's really a black-and-white system; no room for the "gray area". It's like choosing "pass/no pass" for a college course, as opposed to getting a letter grade...don't you want to know how well or poorly you did? That's why everything should, in my opinion, be determined in a 1-5 star fashion. Or 10 star, to be even more accurate.

But that's how the game goes. Rating systems are nothing more than opinion polls, determining how many people on average liked or didn't like something...if you want actual, constructive critiques, you're better off at some kind of art site...you know, where actual artists hang out.
