What language would you like to learn?

This is simple. Just say the language you want to learn and why.

First, say the one you want to learn overall.

Then say a unique language that you would also like to learn. They may both be the same. You don't need to explain this one if you don't want to. Your comment on the language can be anything you want, from why, to how you are learning it, etc.

      For example:

      1. French. It has a wonderful aesthetic, and I might end up living in France one day. Make that most likely. Things may be a little strange in Paris, but there are many interesting people that follow their own artistic pursuits there.

      2. Arabic. I am currently starting on Arabic now, and it looks to be a very interesting language. I just wish things were not so chaotic in the Middle East now. I really don't want to be the dead white man. Maybe I can put my calligraphy to the test by writing it, too.

Feel free to respond to other people's posts (positively)

      Great thread, Vance.

I find Japanese to be rather interesting. It's basically Chinese, but without the tones and less unique characters to memorise. But maybe I'll learn Chinese one day in the future.

I've also been attracted to Finnish recently. It sounds quite lively and bouncy to my ears. Also, its big load of cases make it even more fun.

Maybe I'll end up learning every language in existence. That's one of my over-ambitious life goals.

French - It's a beautiful language and I love basically everything about it. The way it looks, the way it sounds. I also plan to live in France some day.

I'd like to learn Japanese as well. It just sounds more beautiful than French to me. I can understand some of it thanks to Dattebayo's Naruto Shippuden subbing, and if I listen to some phrases long enough, I can say them without mistakes. It's also very easy for me to learn Japanese songs, so I figure I can learn the language.

I also took a class of it, but my parents wouldn't get go on to the 102 class. But I'm saving up for Rosetta Stone. (That is if my parents aren't already planning to get for me for my birthday or Christmas.)

One thing I learned when I went to Mexico is that I'm officially bilingual. Spanish for the win, baby.

      Fuck Dattebayo.

That said, I too am slowly learning Japanese. I've been doing little manga translations here and there to learn, and have enjoyed it quite a bit. Found some good resources too.

If I ever learn this to a level where I can speak it enough to "get by", then I may move onto a 3rd language, but for now, I'm sticking with Japanese.

Korean please, considering I'm going to be living there for a year starting at the end of August.

Otherwise, I think Spanish would be a really practical language to learn. I'd also like to brush up on my French. And I always thought German was very cool sounding.

I was thinking about this yesterday and I have decided that I would like to learn a sign language too. ASL probably but whichever is most commonly used in the US, I'm not too sure which one is. I just think it would be cool and useful to be able to sign.

And Esperanto, cause I'm pretty sure it's on its way to becoming a for real for real global language.

I've been studying Japanese for almost a year here in Tokyo, but there still is a long way to go. Although the grammar and the pronounciation isn't that very hard, the kanji and different levels formality are quite the bother. It's almost like studying three languages at once since every sentence can be said in three basic ways with numerous variation between them.

But after that I'd like to study icelandish (or whatever the language is called). I find it very beautiful. I should relearn all the german I've forgotten since school, too.

I think I'd like to learn German or French. A tiny part of me wants to go to Paris one day and I don't want to be the illiterate dolt tourist walking around aimlesly.

Anyone who is interested in learning beyond the "common" language, I'd like to suggest the titles Dirty Japanese and Dirty Italian - basically collections of slang words and informal speech in their respective languages. Great way to learn some new insults.

      Cantonese

I'd like to learn Cantonese because it's such a challenge, and I'd like to live in Hong Kong at some point. English is an official language there, however knowing a Chinese language would still be useful.

Silly element for you. You say that only because you are used to the English language. Many languages have much worse characteristics than the gender thing. And in fact, even the gender of things has a logic. It's all a matter of getting used to: just like you'll spend time memorising words, you'll take a little extra time to memorise their gender. I tell you, learning genders is nothing. You'll slowly get used to thinkign of objects as masculine of feminine. The problem is when you already know, say, French, and go for Spanish, and the genders for the same objects are different.

If you think genders are bad, wait to learn verb conjugation. Portuguese, for instance, has 9 or so verb tenses, and each verb tense has a different form for each of the direct pronouns. And I mean 9 verb tenses not counting the compound tenses.

See, for example, the verb 'fazer' in the present tense:

      eu faço (I do)
      tu fazes (you do)
      ele/ela faz (he/she does)
      nós fazemos (we do)
      vós fazeis (you do)
      eles fazem (they do)

Yeah, complaining about the gender in objects is pointless when comparing it to conjugation, tenses, etc. Really though, that just sounds like an excuse... not learning a language because of a dissimilarity from English? Laaaaammmeee.

I would love to take up German lessons again, from there I would like to learn Swiss-German.
The other language that I think would be awesome to learn (because it's a very small dialect), is Romansch. There is a small group of people in Switzerland who still speak it.
