Though, I've read the forum rules, I'm not sure if the rule regarding reviving old threads applies here in the Lounge. Most forums I go to discourage reviving old threads, but I'm going to guess it's OK here...
Regardless. I love music.
I love just about all music. I've recently been getting into some old 40's swing, via my drum instructer. I love all sorts of classical (which includes baroque, romantic, classical, etc.), jazz (especially jazz-rock fusion -- Spyro Gyra is the best ), and rock. Very few country, bluegrass, or folk music catches my attention, though there is a few I do like.
However, for the most part, Metal is my musical preference. All sorts of metal, from Black to Viking metal (going alphabetically by subgenre). Of course, there are a few subgenres I do not like, such as grind/metalcore, glam, and goth. I tend to stay away from those three 'Gs'. I'm a big fan of Progressive and Power metal, however. I have the chance to go to ProgPower in Atlanta this year, but unfortunately I don't have the transportation... That really bums me out.
A few favorite bands are Nightwish, Kamelot, Testament, Iced Earth, Fear Factory, DImmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Old Man's Child, Rhapsody, Dream Theater (Mike Portnoy is a God on the drums), classic Metallica, Stratovarius, In Flames, and I could go on for days and days.
My ideal form of music combines a lot of ancient musical knowledge, with the contemporary ideas of progressive and power metal.
I imagine few of you know of the seven Modes, based on Pythagoras' system of music. Though, I'm sure all of you know about the "Ionian", C-Major scale, that just about all contemporary music is based on (not counting the major influences that the Indian raggas have had on our music today). The popularity of this scale is mostly due to the fact that it is built asymmetrically very identically to the human body. That may sound silly, but it has very subliminal effect on the body, often promoting good mental state.
However, there is another scale known as the Dorian mode; D to D. Unlike the other modes, the Dorian mode is completely balanced with the same intervals, on both sides of the mid point (G). This scale was actually very popular in ancient Greece, but was (for some reason I don't know) banned by the church, so isn't generally palatable to American or modern European listeners. Music based on the Dorian mode, however, tends to promote emotional, mental, and social health.
Thus, incorporating a lot of ancient knowledge, and modern day hard rock/heavy metal, I aim to create a new genre of "Healthy Heavy Metal." Go ahead and laugh, but I believe a lot of people could benefit from it
