      The poor

So, where i work we throw out A LOT of stuff, and i mean A LOT! thousands of dollars of food per day. I have tried and tried to see if maybe, just MAYBE we can instead give it away to people who need food. Most of the stuff we throw out is still good. We can't give it away because they might get sick, and we will be sued. We donate to charity, especially me! i donate more then anyone by like 5 times the amount, we give food to the food drive, yet we can't give away food that is still good and throw it out when there are so many starving people/animals out there. It makes me sick! seen some videos of people in africa starving to death, yet here we are throwing out food when we can give it to people in my city who actually need it. Especially in a time like this.

Does things like this piss off anyone else?

That's crazy that someone things they'd get sued so don't give the food away - just give it away with a disclaimer then? Sounds crazy to me!

At work here, we donate most things we don't use, although I work in IT so that's usually computers and the like.

In all honesty I can see where restuarants come from when not giving away that food incase they would get sued.

I don't know if you can add a disclaimer and it might work. Maybe work something out with your boss?

Also, forget legal action. I've probably never been where you work, but think about it. I'm guessing you guys have a whole category of "thow-away food". Some of it's good, some of it's bad, but it's all meant for the trash. Now, you can't give all of it to the homeless, only the good stuff. And that would require it to be sorted, which would probably require a decent amount of effort, espeicially if there is a lot of food. This would likely be costly and I bet really prone to mistake.

Basically my point is this; do you think a homeless person would be able to handle being food poisoned? It would probably kill them.

LucidFlanders, do you know of any Food Not Bombs chapters around you? It's an organization that takes food that would be thrown away (they also take donations from the more benevolent food stores), cooks it, and distributes it to anyone that's hungry. You could probably donate pretty much of the food that you would usually throw away, as we always inspect over the food we get in order to only take the good stuff.

      "lol?"

Uh, nothing about that was supposed to be funny. It was a seriousy question.

Think about it, really. Homeless people have the shittiest healthy. Influenza kills so many of them every year.

Maybe I'm not being clear? If I owned a restaurant, I wouldn't give away any of the food that was meant to be thrown out, even if it was good simply on the basis that if anything was contaminated, it could kill a homeless person with a shit immune system.

It's just the way you phrased it.

      Lol?

No, we got food drives, or the salvation army. But my work refuses to give food away and wants it thrown out. Just looking at all the food we throw out, and how much of it can go to people who need it, just makes me mad sometimes. At my work i am known for sharing, hell i would give half my lunch to an employee that is hungry. I never grew up this way, i just am this way. I wont give everything away, i have to eat too and i'm not stupid enough to starve myself for someone else.

IMO we should start at our own citys we live in, then we can move over there. Sure they have it the worst, but those places are so poor and full of bad stuff. Besides we live here, not over there. Like someone at work told me...you can't save them all. We have our own problems in our own citys, so why ignore where we are to go there? while you can still go there, maybe a few extra bucks so you don't do nothing and let them starve. Although...my sister did something like this to Africa, and 95% of the money she gave out the company kept, and the 5% the poor had. Those TV commercials about the poor are garbage because they eat your money.

Yeah this issue really bothers me about America. We throw out so much pefectly good stuff. I worked at a Walgreens a few years back and when anything was returned; a toaster, hair dryer, lotions, make up (mostly unused just out of thier packaging) we had to put them in the back room, scan them and then throw them away! By law we couldn't resale these items. If a bag of individually wrapped candy/gum/chips etc broke, we had to throw it all away (since you can't sale the individually wrapped items)!! It made me so mad, I even wrote a letter, had a lot of people sign it and sent it to the PR department of Walgreens. I heard nothing back

Well I did take things into my own hands once and I bagged up most of the "damaged" stuff from the week and dropped it off a block away at homeless food kitchen - Guess what?! They wouldn't take half the stuff because they couldn't be certain if it was "safe" enough!!!

Go to most any other countries and this is not even an issue, it's like consume at your own risk, when are we going to catch on!?

      Ughhhhh!!!
