Why the change to past tense?

I'm not to sure about Leary. He seemed very interested in creating and preserving a personality cult, and advocated an almost mindless use of psychdelics in some ways. Obviously some of what he ahd to say can be viewed postively but I'm just not sure about his motives.

He didn't advocate mindless use of psychedelics. He stretches that point many
times, he told people to think for themselves. Also the 'turn on, tune in, drop
out'-phrase was meant differently than widely assumed - that it's just about
'dropping out with acid', when it meant turning on the mind, tuning in on
information and experience and dropping out of previous thought patterns -
however way it works for the individual. But he does point out that if one
chooses to explore his mind with the help of psychedelics in the privacy of his
own home, he should be able to.

Especially in the time, when Timothy Leary was 'hot', there were many people,
many academics, talking about a potential benefit of the psychedelics to the
mind and possibly even society. I think it's unfair that he always gets singled
out as the 'guy, who let LSD get out of hand' or 'the guy that excluded LSD
from scientific research'. Personally I am sure that his motives were pure
and I don't see much of a problem with the way he persued them.
Also he was unbelievably demonized by the media.

BTW.: many of his talks can be listened to via podcast here:

What's up with that youtube video though?
