Tell Me About This forum is utterly unnecessary and totally stupid

Surely a large number of threads on any forum have an implicit goal of the original poster wanting to know about something, or asking about something. So why this forum? It just seems to contain such topics that could and do exist on other forums just prefixed with "Tell me about" or "Ask me about", hence the deliberately grammatically incorrect thread title.

Let's look at the active threads on this forum at the moment. Each one could easily be put elsewhere.

      • Tell me how long you have been lucid dreaming for? - Could easily be "How Long Have You been LDing?" in General Lucid Discussion
      • Tell Me About The Bands (Music Artists) You Like. - Favourite Bands in Entertainment
      • Oh you get the idea

I think, and I could be wrong, that this section is specifically set aside for people who are interested in people. Most of the other forums on DV have set topics of interest like general dreaming, research, blah blah blah, where theads about personal stuff and info taught and learned would just get lost in the shuffle in some other forum.

      *edit*

And yeah, there are duplicate threads but it's much easier to just come here and find the 'clone' thread instead of sifting through the hundreds of other threads stored on the site.

Ask me about/Tell me about is a forum on Something Awful, which Artelis (I believe) liked and suggested be used here. The idea is it's 'Ask me about *interesting subject I'm an expert on*' and 'Tell me about *interesting subject you are an expert on ad there are no topics on*', but that doesn't seem to be the way the DV one works. Thinking abut it, it should be.

It seems that DV completely missed the point on this one. However, it has served another purpose in that it has basically become "The People" forum in which people post about themselves or others with occasionall diversions on this.

I actually quite like this forum, it's sometimes interesting. Gives DV members a chance to get to know each other.

As Alex said that was the original point of the forum, but it really doesn't matter. What is the point in being hyper-anal about repetitive threads? I don't really see the problem. I mean, who really cares?

I'm proud to say that my topics here have thus far followed the original intention of this forum.

And I've seen quite a few topics here that aren't just frivolous. Quite a few of them actually do adhere to the original purpose of the forum, it's really just lately that there have been so many more social topics started.

I agree, I really enjoy this forum. It's full of good conversations and interesting stuff about everyone. There are some forums I never even check, but I always go to the Ask/Tell forum. I wasn't sure I liked the idea when Artelis firsted suggested it, but it's really grown on me.

yaaa know. We should all have some reference in our Sigs or our profile that links us to something we have interest in knowing or sharing (As was intended)
That would make things organize to a degree.

I asked if any one was interested in knowing about weather when this first came to be. I never have received ONE response! And we are ALL under the weather, so to speak.

Hmm, that's a good idea, Howie! Perhaps I shall implement something to that effect when I change my signature. Which will be soon.
