I want to use an audio induction in a certain way that I will now describe, and I am looking for ideas for implementing this system, that do not rely on a computer.

What I want: A system that waits a certain amount of time, such as 30 minutes up to an hour, and then start to play an audio recording over an over, such as every 5 minutes.
The recording could be a sound like a bell , or voice message.
I want to use it when doing WBTB. I will wake up, start the system, and then go to sleep. After 30-60 minutes, when I am already asleep, the system starts to play the recording every 5 minutes, and so it will probably catch me during an REM period.

I don't want to use a computer because I want to use it when traveling.
I thought about one way to implement it:
Use a timer that turns on the current after a set time, and connect to a tape-recorder that has the old style presseble buttons. the tape Play button will be previously pressed, and so when the timer send the current to the tape, it will begin to play a cassete with the message that I will record on the needed intervals. The tape will have to be of the type that changes sides automatically so it will go on indefinably.

Do you have any more ideas for implementing this?

I know RadioShack makes a kit for recording and playing back a few seconds of audio. It's cheap and runs on a 9V battery. You'd just have to hook up some timer to the play button.

However, it's been my experience that if you repeat something every five minutes, you ignore it completely while asleep (and while awake).

An easy solution to both hardware and concept would be to record yourself saying your name on your computer, and edit it with some audio software so that the clip is played several times with various spaces of silence in between. Then, burn the audio file to a CD and play it on loop in a portable CD player. You can even experiment with different volumes without having to do anything harder than turn the dial on the CD player.

I suggest using your name because of the particular effect a person's name has on them. For example, you can often hear your name in a crowded room among all the other converations.

Tell me if you try this, and if it works out. Good luck!
