      5-Hydroxytryptophan

I tried this supplement. I took one 50mg 5-HTP (with B6) one morning and had killer dreams that night and the next night!

FYI: I tried taking it at night the first time I tried it, big mistake, I couldn't sleep!!! Maybe if I took it right before going to bed it would work if I can fall asleep faster that my body absorbs it. Will try that sometime.

I made the mistake of taking 200mgs of 5-HTP before bed. I was awake half the night and half the night I was in the most vivid type dreams. Ones that make you view the world differently when you wake up. I think I'll do it again though. That or I may take less.

The book I just finished by Thomas Yushak uses 5-HTP to supress dreams taking at the beginning of the night so you have REM Rebound then around 3-4 take a combo like Galamatine and Choline. He has a list to his distributors, Ive ordered most of my stuff from them.

      Effect on Dreams:

5-HTP has a positive effect on dream length and quality. Dream enhancement due to 5-HTP is most likely due to REM suppression followed by REM rebound and this results in increased dream vividness in the morning hours as the substance is wearing off. 5-HTP quickly increases serotonin levels that bring on deep and restful sleep. Due to the short half-life however, the 5-HTP is practically out of your system after 5 or 6 hours (assuming you don’t take a large dose). This results in increased REM time in the early morning hours which produces more vivid dreams.

      Effect on Lucid Dreams:

5-HTP can be used by itself to stimulate vivid dreams and hence can help trigger lucid dreams; especially in those who are proficient in the classical induction methods. 5-HTP can also be used to increase the overall quality of sleep on nights where more stimulating supplements are used. In all cases it is best to take 5-HTP at bedtime.

      Side Effects:

The most common side effects of 5-HTP are nausea and gastrointestinal distress. The nausea problem can be resolved by starting at a low dose and then gradually increasing it. Even when large doses are taken the problem tends to diminish over time. Side effects at doses less than 200 mg are rare.

5-HTP should not be taken with prescription anti-depressants (this includes St. John’s Wort) without the direct consultation of a doctor. Many of these anti-depressants act by also increasing serotonin levels and therefore could magnify the effects and possibly lead to potentially dangerous condition known as Serotonin Syndrome. Due to the short time this supplement has been available there are not a lot of studies that have investigated the long term effects of taking 5-HTP.

      Dosage:

There is no maximum recommended dose associated with 5-HTP. However, a reasonable dose range is probably between 50 and 300 mg. For treating depression doses up to 500 mg daily are used. At the lower doses side affects are rare. For lucid dream practices, doses of 200mg or less, taken at bedtime should be sufficient to produce restful sleep and also stimulate dreaming in the second half of the night.

I was just reading about this while browsing erowid last night. They say you can get it at nutrition shops or something... the cvs might have it.

A few people had some interesting results with this and lucid dreaming... I think it's worth a try.
