      Nicotine & Sleep

So my friend who has just quite smoking led me to an interesting thing. It seems "The Patch" or in other words the Nicotine Patch, step 1, 21 mg delivered over 24 hours, has given her consistent lucid dreams while on it. So being a curious guy I tried it and I must say the results were interesting.
Before I go any further however I would like to Stress the fact that I HATE crutches. In other words Nicotine, especially something like "The Patch", is just simply not even close for being good for your body. Not to mention that addicition in any form (food, t.v., drugs, etc.) is really cruddy to but it VERY mildly. I would also like to stress the point that the only TRUE way to have Consistent Lucid Dreams is through diligently and enjoyably remembering and writing down your dreams every morning, Reality Checking, and other wise truely wishing to Lucid Dream for the right reasons. So now that I hope I made myself clear here has been my experience with it.
It seems that using it not so much has necessarily made me aware I was dreaming, in other words lucid, but has made me more Aware in a dream. Before when I dreamt it seemed that I was too caught up in the delusion of the dream. Sort of in this haze where I just excepted what was happening no matter how bizarre. But while using the Patch at night my haze was Much less, infact Almost non-existent, to the point that I would actually have the thought of Reality Checking to see whether I was dreaming or not. I believe it may have to do with Nicotine's effect on the heart rate. In that Nicotine is a stimulant so having a patch slowly and consistently giving you nicotine during the night raises the heart rate and thereby the awareness in your dream so the dream is more clear and you have more of your mental faculties at your disposal in it. This of course is only a hypothesis but its the best one I got.
So just to stress again I've had a couple lucid dreams over the last couple months with out it, and PLENTY have had it consistently with out any horrible chemicals, but the patch has really helped me sort out how to more aware I may be dreaming in a dream, which Reality checks work best for me, and plenty of other more subtle personal mental tricks. So far I've been just working one night with the patch and one without and hope to decrease that even more because like I said, I HATE CRUTCHES, for a plenty of wholesome reasons I won't get into here. ANyways, just wanted to put that out there. Sleep well
