      My First Lucid/Zombie Apocalypse

Fair warning, this dream is a little graphic. If you are squeamish and have an active imagination, you probably shouldn't read it.

Anyway, this is my first LD since joining dream views, and I actually almost forgot it, but luckily I remembered it on my way to work once I woke up all the way. I started off in my workplace wondering if I was in a dream. I thought to myself "No, of course this is real. But I guess I'll do a RC anyway." I pinched my nose shut, closed my mouth, and breathed in deeply. To my surprise, though, I could breathe! I found myself ecstatic, but quickly subdued this feeling and tried to calm down. I looked down at my hands, but not for nearly long enough. When I looked up I was overcome with an urge to leave the building, thinking that staying in a familiar place would make me lose lucidity (I think "Inception" may have been coloring my opinion here). The problem is, I was so worried about getting out the door that I didn't stop to think what would be on the other side. As it turns out, it would end up being a doorway out of lucidity. Normally this would be disappointing, but my subconscious saved me and placed me into a scenario that I was planning on LDing about, a scenario that was actually improved by me not knowing that it wasn't real. It placed me into a full blown zombie apocalypse.

The doorway teleported me into a school gymnasium. People were huddled on the bleachers and crowding the hardwood court, they seemed scared and shaken. A voice came over the intercom. It said that several riots had broken out around town due to a sudden outbreak of what appeared to be rabies. The voice advised the crowd to stay calm, stay in the building, and wait for the police to sort out the situation. I turned to the DC I was with and we exchanged a look of skepticism. We knew better. We knew that someone in the gym was probably bitten, and it was only a matter of time before they turned. The packed gymnasium was just a bloodbath waiting to happen. We opened up the equipment closet and each grabbed a baseball bat, then headed out of the building towards the parking lot. If our suspicions were right, the bats would come in handy.

Once in the parking lot, we headed towards the DC's SUV. As we got closer I noticed his rear window hatch was open, but other than that everything seemed normal. I climbed in the passenger seat while he started the car, and soon enough we were on our way down the road. As we drove I got my first view of the creatures. Their skin was mottled and gray, hair falling out in patches, shambling aimlessly. As we passed by their heads turned to us and they started to head towards our car. Suddenly, we swerved out of the way of a small group feeding on a corpse in the middle of the road. The quick jerk startled me so much that I almost did not notice the cold dead hand that grabbed my shoulder.

A zombie had crawled in through the open hatch and was attempting to bite the driver. The only thing saving the DC from sure death was the head rest between his neck and the snapping jaws of the undead monstrosity. I tried swinging my baseball bat at the creature, but there was not enough room to muster a swing powerful enough to destroy its brain. The DC yanked his emergency brake and shouted out "Grab the shotgun in the back seat!" I shoved the zombie aside, reached back, and grabbed the shotgun laying across the floor. As I pumped a round into the chamber the zombie turned its attention towards me. I tried to aim, but there was not enough room to shoulder the gun. Quickly compensating, I pressed the butt of the gun firmly against the passenger door. I leveled the barrel at the zombie's head and went to pull the trigger, but at the last moment its undead arm crashed down on the gun and pushed it out of the way. The shot exploded forward, impacting its right shoulder, blowing off chunks of rotten flesh and bone. With its arm now dangling at its side, the creature fell backwards into the door. Before it could recover I pumped a fresh round into the chamber, ejecting a spent shell onto the dashboard. Once again, I took aim at its head as it started towards me and pulled the trigger. This time the shot found its mark. The zombies head exploded with violent force, spraying grey matter and blood all over the rear window.

It was a close call, but my first tango with the undead had resulted in success. At this point, the DC handed me a revolver and told me to close the rear window. I clambered back over the seats and found two zombies shambling towards us on the road. I leveled the revolver at the firsts head and squeezed the trigger, its neck jerked back as it fell to the ground. I cocked the hammer back, aimed at the second, and it fell like the first as we pulled away. I put my head out the window and reached to pull it closed when I noticed a third zombie (missing its legs with its entrails hanging out the back) clinging to the bumper. A swift jab with the baseball bat knocked it loose, screaming at us as we drove away.

A short way down the road our SUV started to sputter and slowed to a halt. We were out of gas. The dream jump cuts to a different scene here. Me and the DC had joined another small group of survivors, three I think, and we were driving in a van. Down the road, we passed by an elementary school bus pulled over on the side of the road. There were children inside, but none were left alive. Some were slumped against the bloodied windows, their pulses long since gone. Others were clawing to get out, there mouths bloodied and agape.

We soon turned off onto a dirt road surrounded by foliage. Further down this road, we approached a pile of leaves blocking our approach. When the van plowed through it, we suddenly lurched forward and slammed to a halt. The leaves were concealing a massive pot hole that the van was now half submerged in. I tucked the revolver into my waistband, shouldered the shotgun, and our group stepped out of the van. As we examined the damage done, I heard a rustling in the bushes behind us. A figure emerged from the foliage and I leveled my shotgun at it. I quickly took notice that it wasn't like the other creatures. Its body was devoid of hair, its face misshapen and lopsided (It very closely resembled Sloth from the Goonies), but most importantly it wasn't attacking us. Without warning, it shouted out "Now!", and many more popped out of the bushes to surround us. Two were armed with rifles, the rest with makeshift spears and melee weapons. I dropped my shotgun to the ground and our group surrendered to these hideous creatures.

We were marched in a single file line to the edge of a quarry. Inside I could see regular humans in shackles swinging pickaxes at block of white rock, with more creatures armed with spears keeping close watch. We soon found out that these creatures were actually infected humans, but discovered that drinking pepto bismol kept them from turning (oh, dream logic. you crack me up). The then told us that we were now their slaves, and we would be put to work mining bismuth (the active ingredient in pepto bismol) in order to keep them alive. This didn't sit well with me, however, so I pulled out the revolver still tucked into my waistband and put two rounds each into the rifle bearing guards. My group made a break for a nearby river, as I covered our retreat, brandishing my now empty revolver at the poorly armed creatures. They did not give chase.

I was the last to jump in the river and experienced another jump in time. We washed up on a boat ramp downriver in an industrial park. As we clambered onto the dock, we saw a warehouse with two zombies standing out front. One of the dream characters grabbed a rebar club (a loose piece of concrete with a rebar steel rod hanging out) and approached one of the zombies. He swung the club at its legs like a warhammer, sending the zombie to the ground, then lifted the club over his head and brought it crashing down, crushing the zombies skull with a satisfying crunch. I bum rushed the other zombie and shouldered into it, also knocking it to the ground. I proceeded to curb stomp its head over and over until there was nothing left but a flat mash of bone, blood, and brains.

We entered the warehouse to find a machine shop devoid of life, undead or otherwise. I began scavenging for weapons and the rest of the DC's followed suit. I managed to find two crowbars, and fastened some sharp pieces of metal to broom handles to make spears. A few minutes passed and our group was well armed, just in time to see a zombie horde approaching our warehouse. We readied our weapons and opened the bay door to meet our attackers, but as the dying light of sunset entered the building....

I unfortunately woke up. What a shame, it would've been an epic battle. Still though, this was a great first lucid experience and I'm glad I could share it.

"discovered that drinking pepto bismol kept them from turning", dream logic is awesome.
