I went to sleep feeling really low for some reason, I think it was just because I had sleep deprivation. I was lying in bed for around three hours playing an old Splinter Cell game that I bought but never had much time to invest in playing. Anways, I closed my eyes expecting to go lucid during the night - I was pretty stressed out though, so I didn't expect it to be as vivid or enjoyable as the night before.

I was right. My dreams reflected the way I was feeling in the real world. There wasn't much colour in my dreams, and everything that could go wrong usually did.
Although I don't remember everything, I do remember one certain event very well.
For some unknown reason, my family was extremely poor and suffering - I didn't live with them it seemed, I was just visiting.
It was very upsetting for me. I suppose it was like a Parallel universe?

At one point, I was in a small corner shop. Being poor, and a risk taker (I suppose?) - I decided to snatch a big packet of chewing-gum, not the most nutritious of foods I know! But I thought atleast it was something. The shop was quite busy, so I thought that the owner wouldn't notice, or if he did that he wouldn't bother doing anything about it.
I was wrong, he pressed an alarm after I ran out - and then called over the local thug from over the street to help him stop me (what an over reaction). I began to panic, and even offered to return the item or pay for it to avoid any trouble. He didn't accept, so I basically ran as fast as I could down the nearest road.
As always, it seemed as though I was running on a treadmill. I was basically waiting for the thug to catch up to me. When he did, he revealed a gruesome looking machete. It looks as though he was working in a butchers. He looked the same age as me though.

The bastard tried to slice me open.
So I tried my best to wrestle his hands, but still got cut in places.
Ouch.
I don't know why, but after a minute of fighting back - I think the thug got bored with me. I wasn't going to let myself die in my own dreamworld.
He became more interested in the civilian in front of us.
He tossed me a similar sized knife and sort of gave me a nod of approval. He wanted me to join him in slicing up the civilian in front of us.
For no known reason, may I add.
I stood there stunned, as the thug thrusted his blade into the innocent victims chest and kidneys. I didn't approve of his psychotic bullying, so I tried to catch him off guard and give him a good stabbing in the chest. The maniac deserved it.

It didn't go to plan. He moved out of position and I instead just cut his elbow.
..Oops.
As the dying/dead citizen fell to the ground, the thug got real pissed at me that I tried to stab him in the back when he gave me a weapon and trusted me - and therefore, started to go for me again. What did he expect?
It seemed we fought for a good 5 minutes atleast, and the battle was pretty equally matched. It was like a classic swordfight from a movie, just with 12 inch machetes instead of great swords.

As you may have noticed, I didn't have much control over this lucid dream - or I would have easily changed things for the better. But for some reason, I just didn't bother. I wasn't motivated and I just wanted to be left alone.
I took alot of damage, and felt real pain - each slice was as realistic as I could imagine, although there was no pain from the wounds. I felt sort of bad that I was carving this maniac in front of me, but it was self defence!?

I can't even remember who won, sadly. But I certainly didn't die.
This is the first 'slice' (excuse the pun) of violence I've had in my lucid dreams..
hopefully the last, unless I'm a cool ninja or something.

Wow!

Great!

For once not some effete pussy intellectual, but a Real Dreamer.

Now why would you have wanted any Control in that dream. Wasn't it GREAT as is.

Look at your adversary. Wasn't he GREAT? He was fighting you, but REALLY, or was he so confident and brave that he could PLAY with you with a knife?

When he saw other 'game' he decided he had bonded with you enough and even invited you to play on his side, and tossed you a knife.

But you had enough Character to reject the plan of falling on innocent victims and choose to go up against the World Expert of Knife Dualing. I actually admire you for that. That took BALLS.

And you know you DID actually fight to the DEATH. You were just to dumb to fall down, as the Marines say of themselves.

If this dream were the First of its Kind then it would have been Pivotal and Important. It would signify your contempt of Death and your Conviction of Personal Immortality, at least as so far as your Dream Persona is concerned.

But anyway, I am pleased to meet you. You are a MAN, and I am proud to call you SIR.

And don't take anything from the pussies on this page...

If you get anymore sarcastic you might just shrivel up and die, Leo.

EDIT: Well I kind of hope it's sarcasm and not some kind of split personality deal.

So you think that was sarcasm?

What about the hypothesis that you were one of the pussies on this page I was talking about?

I am a great believer in Spirituality and Civilization. but I am over 60 years old now. but I can still remember that the most important thing in life, the first priority of all, is to be a Man.

I congratulate somebody on proving their manhood and you think it sarcasm.

I don't know what I'll get you for christmas yet, but I already know what color it will be.

Pink.

Views?

You want a view?

Have you ever been in a knife fight? Or any kind of fight?

Time slows down and one gets a weapon's specific kind of tunnel vision... if you are lucky. Cowards freeze up and go completely blind, but those of some inherent nerve and courage, when they get in a fight, they zero in on and focus upon the opponent's weapon, and the time slowing down allows for more thought to go into dodging and parrying, and for the counterblows and the mortal strikes that one would wish to inflict.

It is quite similar in both dreams and waking.

But, yes, not many people can relate, can they?

I'm all for bullets flying out of hand held weapons.

I don't know if you could even go very lucid in that situation;
you might die so I'd make sure he was eliminated before I went on my way.

People run out of bullets.

It is part of the training of every Infantry Soldier to be aware during close combat of enemy soldiers who are desparately trying to reload their weapons. One is instructed to quickly approach them and stab them to death with one's bayonet.

so it is that reliance upon a firearm can get one killed.

There is a famous story about this. Sir Richard Francis Burton, the first Westerner to sneak into Mecca, and the man who discovered the sourse of the Nile -- he had an assosiate in his explorations -- a younger officer by the name of John Speaks. While camping in the Sahara with a party of cargo bearers and camel handlers, they were set upon by a group of banbits. Well, Burton strode out of his tent and unloaded his pistols into the bandits and then pulled his sword and started cutting into them. John Speak, on the other hand, came out firing, and then fell back to re-load. Burton, exasperated by the very tactic that so often gets people killed, shouted at Speaks "My God, Man! Don't be such a coward. Pull your sword and get to it!"

Well, Speaks never did quite live this moment down, and eventually committed suicide. Probably because the story got back to England. You see, while Burton had to turn to rally Speaks back into the fight, it took his eyes away from the battle just long enough for a Bandit to jab him through the face with a spear -- from one cheek through the other, knocking out a few teeth along the way. Well, that only made Burton all the more angrier and he more or less singlehandedly killed off or chased away the Bandits.

Burton might have been discrete enough to keep Speak's cowardice a secret between friends; however, when after Burton had discovered Lake Tanganika and thought it the sourse of the Nile, he fell sick with a fever, and so Speaks went on by himself for a while and came to Lake Victoria which was larger and situated at a higher elevation, making it a better candidate to be the Source of the Nile. Though Speaks had been hired to be part of Burton's Expedition, he undercut Burton and tried to publish his findings under his own name exclusively. Well, this seemed to Burton like a second betrayal, and so Burton probably had no problem with discussing Speak's earlier cowardice in battle.

Yes, there is a higher level of thinking. As with dreaming. You just need to open your mind a little.

Unfortunately, I opened my mind with psychedelic drugs.

It's not so much a section of the brain, it's more of a frame of mind.

And I could completly see Leo calling everyone a pussy. He is sort of an ass sometimes

Leo if you are so sure that you're right, why do you always try to force people to think your ways are right? (yes, you do force people because when they dont agree with you, you flame them). If you were so correct don't you think people would come to you naturally and on their own?

Yes, what a way to prove his manliness by opportunistically stabbing someone in the back in a dream (you know, those things where there aren't any consequences).

No!

Not if they are as stubborn as they are stupid.

People are often emotionally invested in what they have grown up believing. Their Stupidity is their Identity. If they were to give up their Stupidity, they would no longer know how to act.

And, since you could not see this yourself...

Well, why should I even say it, when it is clear you would not be able to understand anyway.

If you were to ever understand what you don't like, you wouldn't know how to act.

On the Morality of backstabbing.

In One on One Combat, backstabbing is to be frowned upon.

But on the Battlefield, in the crush of Battle, one's primary responsibility is to be the Champion of One's Comrades, and kill and lay low, as quickly as possible, the greatest number of Enemy by any means possible.

Indeed, there is a certain skill involved in killing very quickly and efficiently, and this skill more than makes up for any dubiousness in Chivalric Honor.

Indeed, this has always been understood when it comes to Battlefield Combat -- as Soldiers of any Wisdom at all would pair up and fight back to back. And so it is that anybody who is either so proud, or so silly, or so disliked and unsociable as not to be able to find a friend to cover his back, well, deserves to die, if that can be said of anybody caught in the mayhem of close combat.

Agreed (mostly), but we were talking about manliness, not morality.
